I really like Antenna-tv,I hope they don't change! Still waiting on Me-tv here. For a cable commercial tv station,FamilyNet is also good when they air classics, they treat them pretty well.

Earlier this evening I was at my parents and caught Dick Van Dyke on TVLand. After watching it on MeTV for the past several months their presentation was outright appalling. I wonder how Da Vinci would feel if someone trimmed off 20 percent of the canvas to the Mona Lisa, reprinted his name on it in some tiny modern font, and slapped a big Louvre logo in a corner while putting a bright red banner on the other side reading "New Exhibits in the Egyptian Antiquities Collection Starting Next Week!!!" What's most depressing is the fact my parents, who grew up with this stuff, see no problem with shelling out $190/month to Comcrap (and thereby the people making these decisions). They, along with everyone else who knows I don't have cable, think I'm some kind of weirdo because I don't have cable. They pay someone $2300 a year for commercials and I'm supposed to be the crazy one?

Why on earth does what seems like every thread on here for the past few weeks start knocking pay TV?! Keep in mind, there is a lot more to cable than re-runs from 40 years ago/Nick at Nite and TV Land. Since I watch sports, news channels, original programming on nets like Travel, A&E, FX, USA, History, Food, etc. - last time I checked, that stuff's not on DVD, and I don't mind paying for it, although I wish it was cheaper. I hardly even watch reruns on cable networks, as I agree, they do have too many commercials (although I will if it's something I like and nothing else is on), if I want to watch something old, I'll watch Me-TV. I agree, if I'm just watching something that's available over the air, I wouldn't see any use for cable.
There are a lot of us that do enjoy cable TV and see a purpose in it. Plus, I don't want to have to fool with my antenna for local channel reception where I am. I'm not trying to be rude, but just stating my opinion. There is PLENTY of stuff on cable that's not on DVD - and if you look at the recent trends, most of cable's most successful networks air a lot of, if not mostly, original programming that is not available on home media.

Cable is awesome IF you actually use it and get your money's worth. However 95% of the people I know watch no more than 5-10 hours of TV a week and most of that is on the main broadcast stations or the aforementioned reruns and movies that are hacked to pieces. I believe most pay TV subscribers on this board do indeed get their money's worth since we all watch a lot of TV.
In my eyes, pay TV is the same as owning a large truck. 95% of truck owners outright insist they need such a huge vehicle for everyday use. Spend thousands of dollars more per year in gas, maintenance, and initial cost than they would just by using a regular car. Meanwhile it's used to haul something maybe twice a year. Only a small minority of people actually use their 3/4 ton trucks and premium cable service. But most of them have either fallen victim to vanity or believed everything a salesmen told them. |
