And it is not unskilled labor. Working a cash register means having to learn to deal with the public, remembering keys, change counting, exchange monies, etc. Once you can handle a cash register, it can lead you to other jobs with the same skill. I started out working the register at my father's business and it was that skill that led me to other jobs and eventually leading me to the law field.
People who are handling food (whether it is fast food or a restaurant) means having to adhere to certain health codes. It also means having to deal with safety issues and proper handling of food and cookware. It is more than just flipping a patty.
Anyone who looks down on those who work at a job that doesn't require a college education is a fool.
Not to mention working with the rude and impatient customers.. that alone is a life lesson lol. I've never worked at a restaurant/fast food place but I've seen how some servers are treated and it's awful.. takes a lot of patience and people skills not to knock the living crap out of some of them.

So damn true! Patience and the ability to not say things you want to say so bad but it is your job and you have to adhere to that old adage, "The customer is always right." Although we know they aren't. I have seen people be so damn rude and classless towards those who work in establishments they feel is worthless work.

Did it ever dawn on you that someone may be working there part-time? They may actually have a career outside of that part-time job flipping burgers?

While I worked at a law firm as a paralegal for 40 hours a week, I was also working at a music store part-time, 25 hours a week, so I could keep my daughters in private school since I was in the process of divorce and needed the extra money.

I myself have known at least five women who worked at part-time jobs while having a full-time job or career. I also knew one man who did that.

I totally agree that moonlighting, in fact any part-time job outside the office, is not only necessary sometimes, depending on circumstances, but in fact teaches you many things about life you just wouldn't know otherwise! Generally the people I know who've had these sh** jobs (sorry, I can't come up with a better term) are all much more tolerant, enlightened, and responsible than the ones who have never had to do it. I myself never realized how good it is to sweat until I had to.

A job is a job, I never look down on anyone who's out actually working to make a living. I only look down on lazy ass people who are capable of working but they don't want to work, but they‘re asking you for money.

I knew a teacher who worked at Lane Bryant part time, and in fact, my mom also worked there a really long time ago once to help support me.

Let's not forget those who are in college or universities achieving a degree, they work part-time at places like fast food or restaurants, small stores, so-called "meaningless" work.

Overall, I think retail and restaurant workers have a lot more class than people like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton!
Good one!

...I couldn't work in retail, I don't think. I don't handle being smarted off to well at *all*, and would probably go berserk the first time some ******* was rude. So those who DO work in retail and customer-centric industries have my praise, my respect, and my sympathy for having to put up with clowns like that on a continual basis.

Working in retail is a wonderful learning experience though. You really get the chance to learn a lot about people. Some good. Some bad.

Well, someone has to make my hamburger. And someone should take my money when I buy something at a store. Heck, some of those people may make more than I do. It's not glamorous, but hell, last year I changed a 6-year old's diapers for a living; who am I to look down on people?

It's the lazy ones I don't like. If the person behind the fast food counter is friendly, competant, and isn't standing around jacking off when people need to be waited on, I'm cool. I've worked with "professionals" who aren't any of those.

Working out on the floor is better than behind the customer service desk.
