The longest car trip (well, technically Greyhound bus) was an 18 hour ride from New York to Ohio in 2004.

Never again!

That's what I said when I finally got home from Great Falls. It was a hellish car drive leaving an armpit town. Ewwww.

I've driven from northern MN to Austin, TX a few times. that's 1200 miles, 18-24 hours, depending on length of stops. And when I was younger, we'd drive from MN to Phoenix, AZ a couple of times. Forgot exactly how long of a trip that was.

to Chicago and back last year with my cousin. took us about 15 hours (We didn't bother stopping to sleep, just to eat and refuel.) I've also been to Florida and Toronto by car from Chicago, but I was too young to actually drive.

Ooops....I must've missed/forgot about your mention. Sorry.

Still, your car trip sounds just like the one we took. It was in 1974 when I was 9 and there were no hand held computer games, no DVD player in the car, no walkmans, nothing! I took a lot of books to read though. The sights along the way were very beautiful.
Oh, my gosh... that's true. So much of today's technology leaves youngsters with not seeing the beautiful sights through the car windows. I can only imagine how beautiful it was for you to experience.

At the end of June 1978, my dad and I took some of my paternal grandma's stuff from Toledo -- this was after we got it to Toledo from Mayfield Heights -- to Phoenix. We left on Saturday and got to Phoenix on the following Tuesday.

The company would have allowed me to stop 1/2 way and stay the night but I had gotten up really early and it was only 2 in the afternoon when I reached 1/2 way. I figured I could crash at a hotel or be at home by the time I would normally go to bed... big mistake because the second half of the trip I hit constrcution, rush hour and then night driving through the mountains. Future trips I decided to make the stop 1.2 way

It was exciting. Back in the day, not all the cars had AC, so for some of the long stretches it would get uncomfortable, and in the plains and for example, in Iowa, with mile after mile of corn fields it could get a little monotonous--but I have to say overall the experience of driving across the country is exciting and fun. You're in a different place--and seeing new places and meeting new people is an adventure. When you drive long distances with other people you make a lot of memories and have many laughs. And you always have the car radio. I liked listening to the news on the radio, and, more often than not, some scratchy local country am station playing honky tonk music. Driving cross country was one of the most fun things I've ever done. I always liked going to different restaurants, diners and cafes along the way and driving into small towns off the freeway for a little bit of the 'local color'.
