Was Florida Evans not the maid on Maude in the first season The role was played by Esther Rolle. The same character correct> Please explain.

Also they must have liked John Amos as her husband too! That's as far as it goes. The two shows are not connected IMO! They made Florida a whole new person living in Chicago. John Amos was given a new name. And there was never any mention or storyline that they moved from New York to Chicago! So they are NOT supposed to be Florida and Henry from New York! So the debate continues because technically it is a spin off, but not really because if they wanted it to be, they would have mentioned Maude ,her former employer and that they moved from New York, and they never did ! They wouldn't have changed Henry's name to James! So the only thing is that they kept the name Florida, (probably because it's cool, I never met a person named Florida before) other than that it's a whole different lady! IMO!
