Hello all! My name is Ashley, and I am a huge fan of George Burns and Gracie Allen! I've been watching the show all summer on TVLand, but had seen/heard various skits from their radio and early film days prior to. This has simply become my favorite show, and (even though I'll probably be sent to Classic Sitcom Purgatory for this) even think that Gracie Allen is funnier than our beloved Lucy. I hope to get to know everyone on the board soon

Hi Ashley,
I must agree with your assessment of Gracie Allen vs. Lucy. Of course it is a matter of taste, but I feel that Burns & Allen is quite superior to I Love Lucy (and every other sitcom). George and Gracie were so good at their craft of comedy, and the writers and co-stars were absolutely the best. As good as Fred and Ethel were, I feel that Harry and Blanche were even better. And Von Zell was in a class by himself. I just had the good fortune to acquire a copy of the out-of-print "Say Goodnight, Gracie!" by Cheryl Blythe and Susan Sackett (ISBN 1-55958-019-4). It contains much about George and Gracies' career, and concentrates particularly on the TV show. I would recommend it to all Burns & Allen fans. |

Gracie was underappreciated IMO. When they talk about 50's tv comedy first one that pops up is Lucy. Don't get me wrong I love Lucy(as if you couldn't tell by my name and sig
) But, Gracie is hilariuos! I just started watching it on tvland. She is so sincere in her logic. Bless her little heart, she understands herself!
