ABC a Fourth-Place Network for Two Months
Tuesday April 8 4:05 PM ET Fox's resurgence over the past few months means ABC is frequently the fourth-place network, and its weakness was evident again last week. Only two ABC programs "Primetime Thursday" and "The Bachelor" were among the week's 40 most-watched prime-time programs last week, according to Nielsen Media Research. By contrast, NBC had 16 shows in the top 40, CBS had 15 and Fox had seven, Nielsen said. ADVERTISEMENTABC has been the fourth-place network for six of the previous eight weeks. It avoided that fate during the weeks of two special events the Academy Awards and Martin Bashir's interview with Michael Jackson. More importantly for ABC, it was also a distant fourth place last week among viewers aged 18 to 49, the advertiser-friendly demographic that ABC, NBC and Fox most aggressively chase. By a wide margin, CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was the week's most popular show, beating Fox's next-best "American Idol" by more than 5 million viewers. NBC's Katie Couric soared into the top 20 in prime-time with her Sunday night interview with the Central Park jogger. CBS won the week, averaging 12.1 million viewers (8.0 rating, 13 share). NBC averaged 11.1 million viewers (7.3, 12), and narrowly beat Fox for first place among viewers aged 18 to 49. Fox had 9.3 million viewers (5.6, 9), and ABC 7.5 million (4.9, 8). UPN (2.0, 3) and the WB (1.9, 3), finished in a dead heat with 2.1 million viewers and Pax TV (0.8, 1) had 1 million viewers. NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 10.8 million viewers (7.6 rating, 15 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" was second, averaging 9.8 million viewers (7.1, 14) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.3 million (5.3, 10). A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show. For the week of March 31-April 6, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "CSI:" Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 26.4 million; "American Idol-Tuesday," Fox, 21.2 million; "Friends," NBC, 20.8 million; "American Idol-Wednesday," Fox, 20.3 million; "Survivor: Amazon," CBS, 19.8 million; "ER," NBC, 18.9 million; "Everybody Loves Raymond," CBS, 18.6 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 17 million; "Law & Order: SVU," NBC, 15.8 million; "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," NBC, 15.6 million. source: associated press |
