I listened to the Vanished episode about Dale today and the little tidbit at the end was very interesting. On the day that Dale went missing, an unidentified man came in to his daughter's workplace and asked for her but she was off so the man left and went outside to a payphone and was there for 15-20 minutes. His daughter isn't sure if it's related or not, but the episode hinted that maybe the original plan was altered from harming someone Dale loved to Dale himself.

This is a perplexing case. I know the focus is on the friend that Dale knew who was going through a divorce. It is possible he was just angry at Dale and ripped down the posters because he was going through his own personal demons at the time, as a divorce is never easy. I do feel that guy is clear though. A guy who would rip down posters in a post office out of anger is probably not smart enough or thinking clear enough to concoct a murder.
I can understand why Dale took the call. Small town, he probably knew the person on the other end of the line, possibly. He certainly seemed like he had done something like this before. I guess my thought is if he knew the person why did they kill him? And if what someone who legitimately got some service from him to get their car going then why didn't this person come forward? Well, I think it is because that this call is the tie to what happened to him. But why though? We may never know. He could have been threatened, there could have been extortion against him for something he knew, something he did, etc. Yes it could have been an affair. But why would his lover set him up to die if that is the case? All I know is that someone covered their tracks here. To not find his body to this day means it could very well be a professional hit as well. |

Dale was having an affair with his friend (the prime suspect mentioned in the segment) Dan Bishop's wife around the time of his disappearance. Bishop "sold" his Corvette to his cousin, Veldon Barnes, around the same time. Barnes had a girlfriend at this time named Debbie Lacy, and investigators believe she was the mystery woman who called about getting her car jump started. They believe that Barnes was the person who killed Dale, and with the help of Bishop, they dumped the truck in a river. Unfortunately, both Barnes and Lacy are both deceased. Which is why the charges against Bishop were dropped.
