Default Alice on Training Wheels

I guess I never noticed this before.

In the episode where Peter loses his job at the bike shop, the whole family goes bike riding near the end.

Alice brings up the rear, and she has training wheels on her bike. Do you suppose Ann B. Davis never learned how to ride a bike?

I think just trying to make that scene funny. I always chuckle a little seeing the training wheels on Alice's bike.

My uncle, who was born in 1924, never learned how to ride a bike. Ann B. Davis was born in 1926, just for comparison.

During the Great Depression era my grandparents never bought him one, as they lived in the downtown area where stores, church, schools etc. were all within walking distance. A bicycle was a pretty big expense in that era. My dad however (b. 1925) got to learn while in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he also got to play ping-pong for the 1st time.

Anyway, while it was a funny gag, it's interesting to speculate as to whether Ann had ever learned to ride a "two-wheeler."

Alice didn't drive either. I wonder if she knew how? Will Geer of the Waltons, didn't know how to drive in real life.

My dad, born in 1916, probably knew how to ride one, since he taught me how to ride, as a small boy. I rode my bike to school in the elementary years; back then, no locks or anything, nobody stole bikes.

I don't know about my mother and her brother (1920/1918). My mother talked about them walking to school, so they might not have had a bike.
