She denied knowing anything about Anthonette's disappearance. Oddly, when the FBI report was turned over to Gallup PD, they did not include the interview in which she basically confessed to them in 1994. He said that not knowing about this "confession" interview, as well as not being up to come up with a motive were reasons why he never formally charged her.
I am 100% convinced that in Anthonette had been from a stable middle class family in a good community, she would have been found, and the case would have been closed, with arrests and convictions by the late 80s.

Poor Anthonette had too many strikes against her, for law enforcement to pursue the case with the urgency it would in similar cases (Elizableth Smart. etc)

-the family was poor
-Anthonettes parents were known to Police and involved in drugs
-Penny was an addict, which explains why Anthonette was a mother figure to her sisters
-the family was of mixed Latino/Native American heritage
-all the people in Penny's life were shady

This is just the reality of the circumstances in North America. The Police looked down upon Penny and her family, and probably did not handle the case with urgency as it would have been with a family without problems realizing to drugs, crime, and poverty.

Agreed. You would think that where a child was involved, all that would not matter.

Penny's family and acquaintances being shady definitely muddied the waters because no one would tell the truth.

I can’t answer if she’s still alive now, but I fully believe the mother sold her daughter to someone (my guess is a dead trafficker) to get money. I can’t answer if the waitress REALLY saw her, but guess it depends 1) where she was at the time and 2) did they take her there??
My guess is now she’s likely gone (killed after likely being sold multiple times)

The Prosecutor's Podcast did their most recent episode of this case. It was largely information we already knew but a few things stood out to me:

-Not mentioned on UM, but there was a sighting at a truck stop in Missouri in 1989 where a truck driver thought he saw a girl resembling Anthonette and that she was alone and acting like she was scared of people.

-The 911 phone call was never traced to a precise location, but they were able to determine that the call game from Gallup (town where Anthonette lived) and not Albuquerque as the person on the call claimed.

-Penny's best friend (at that time) was a man named Roger (some other sources have said his name was Ronald), and he says he and Penny got into a fight that night at the bar, and he went over to her house and was knocking on the door and windows asking to talk to her. This all happened at around 3:30 a.m. in the morning. Roger left and went home, and apparently he had an alibi of sorts with a girlfriend or friend verifying he came home shortly after this.

-Two of Penny's neighbors said they saw a brown van parked in front of Penny's house at around 6:30 a.m. on the morning of Anthonette's disappearance.

-According to the Prosecutors Podcast, the 911 call came after there was some "heat" around the case, since it was a little over a year after Anthonette's disappearance. Also, Wendy came forward with her "Uncle Joe" story about Anthonette being abducted and forced into a brown van 5 years after Anthonette's disappearance.

Their conclusion was that Penny was going to "sell" Anthonette to someone, and that this "sale" was facillitated by "Emo" (creepy guy who was friends with Roger, and who was giving Anthonette gifts on the evening before her disappearance), and Penny was under the assumption that Anthonette was going to be brought back, and either Anthonette was killed shortly after her disappearance, or whoever "bought" her refused to return her. So Penny was forced to go with the ruse about waking up and finding Anthonette missing. Over the years, they changed tidbits of their stories to fit with what witnesses reported that morning. I do believe Roger knocked on Penny's door that morning and they used this, coupled with the neighbors who saw the brown van outiside of Penny's house at 6:30 a.m., and fabricated the entire "Uncle Joe" story.

This video was an update from Crystal Gutierrez (who has extensively covered the case) a few months ago saying that Penny's friend Ronald (who is currently incarcerated) has agreed to talk to investigators. So hopefully if he has some knowledge about what happened to Anthonette he will provide it to investigators. They do not think he was involved in the abduction of Anthonette, but being that he was best friend's with Penny and also friends with "Emo" he might have information.

No chance it was Anthonette. Just like the phony baloney "waitress sighting" 5 years after the abduction. The waitress was not even looking at Anthonette's picture. It was a computer generated age-progression photo of Anthonette at 14.

Source?

At any rate, the call was almost 100% certainly a hoax. Probably perpetrated by Penny, to throw off suspicion of her.

Emo never said anything in regards to bringing Anthonette. On the contrary, when Penny asked where Emo would be taking her, Emo replied "it's better if you do not know." This was a permanent sale.

This timeline does not add up. Emo took Anthonette the night before Police were summoned. That would not have given Eno or whoever was involved in her kidnapping time to murder her, than to have Penny magically be privy to this news within less than 24 hours.

The other thing is that Penny was in on the sale, so he probably spent days concocting a explanation of where Anthonette was, when she was involved in her disappearance in the first place.

I sure hope so. 40 years is too long. Hopefully Anthonettes sisters will have closure.

I don't think it was Anthonette either at the truck stop. IMO, the 911 was a hoax perpetuated by Penny (or someone close to her) to make it seem like Anthonette was alive. Same thing with Wendy's "Uncle Joe" story coming out 5 years later. All ruses to throw off the investigation.

I think their theory of the case is mostly spot on, but they seem to think Penny "sold" Anthonette to someone with the thought being that eventually Anthonette would be returned to her...which I don't agree with because it would make no sense for her to report her missing so soon.

And this is my problem with UM's presentation of the segment; it's given from Penny's perspective/story instead of having it be more scrutinized by law enforcement. Because I never would have thought she would have been involved based off of the UM segment alone.

Here is a link to the interview Crystal Gutierrez did with Ronald Perry, Penny's best friend at the time of Anthonette's disappearance. In her interview with the FBI in 1994, Penny says that she, Emo, and Ronald (again I do not know why some sources refer to Penny's best friend as being named Roger) all conspired to abduct/sell Anthonette that night at the bar and that Penny did not want to be there when Anthonette was taken. Ronald denies ever knowing that Penny was involved in drugs, says he did not know Anthonette was missing until the FBI interviewed him about it, and denied any involvement or knowledge about Anthonette's disappearance.

There is also an interview with Ronald's ex-wife. She says that on the morning of Anthonette's disappearance, Ronald showed up at their house between 4 or 5 a.m. and he passed out drunk. Emo drove Ronald home in Ronald and his ex-wife's truck (they only owned one vehicle). She has no idea how Emo got home. She says Emo would drive Ronald around everywhere essentially like a chauffeur for him and that Emo would pay for everything when the two of them were together. After Anthonette disappeared, Ronald and Emo never hung out together again.

I tend to believe Ronald. My gut instinct is Emo was introduced to Penny through Ronald, Penny made an offhand remark to Emo and Ronald at the bar that night that Anthonette was becoming a problem for her, and Emo said he would be the one to take her. I think Emo kept buying Ronald drinks that night to form an alibi of sorts that would place he and Ronald away from Penny's house at the time she says Anthonette was abducted (she told the FBI it was just getting light outside which would have been shortly before 6 a.m.).

UM has its flaws, but maybe they chose to give Penny the benefit of the doubt and not even raise the possibility that Penny was involved. Contrast that with Jaclyn Dowaliby and other cases profiled in which the parents were prime suspects.

I'm going to watch/listen to this. I have a sickening feeling about this case the more information that comes out. It makes the whole scene where they all went to the medicine woman or spiritual lady seem completely inauthentic. If all of this information is true, Penny staged that whole thing. It was a reenactment of a supposed visit to the medicine woman, so maybe that (a) never took place or (b) the medicine woman wasn't very credible.

Penny was always a suspect, in regards to Anthonettes disappearance. Unsolved Mysteries was only concerned about the ratings for NBC. There is a laundry list of cases that Unsolved Mysteries alters the details of cases, in order to appeal to viewership numbers.

The truth of the matter, is that UM knew that to tell the truth about Penny, would negatively affect the ratings, as if she was portrayed as a drug addict and possible prostitute, people would lose interest, and dismiss the case entirely.

A show like Unsolved Mysteries that generated huge ratings for a major network (NBC), would be given a large budget to properly research the case. Unfortunately, when it comes to these types of shows, the integrity of presenting facts is eclipsed by what producers think will captivate the interest of the public.

An example would be:

-the waitress sighting in 1991
-the phone call one year later
-the phony baloney "Uncle Bob" door knock

All three could easily be dismissed by a minimum amount of detective work, but UM ran with it, since it captured the imagination of the average TV viewer.
