Cool Philadelphia Grammar

Here's another regional speech thread - this one's for Philly!

wooder - what you swim in

wooder eyes - water ice, like "Italian ice" but mushier

"Meet me at the eagle" - a reference to the eagle in the central court of Wanamaker's deaprtment store (now a Lord and Taylor)

the Blue Route - Interstate 476 between Chester and Norristown (so called because when first proposed, it was drawn on maps in blue pencil)

75 on the square - i.e., 75 degrees Fahrenheit on Rittenhouse Square, in the southwest corner of Center City

the Sure-Kill - the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76), so nicknamed because of its dangerous curves and high fatality rate

choklit - what Hershey's makes

benaculars - what you use to see something far away

Fillufya, Fluffya - two other ways to pronounce the city's name

downashore - the Jersey shore, epsecially between Atlantic City and Cape May

Thristy - the day before Friday

tal - what you use to dry yourself with after a bath

the Ben - the Benjamin Franklin Bridge

the Wall Women - the Walt Whitman Bridge

And of course. . . .

Yo! - "Hello," "How are you?", "Goodbye," and "Peace."

My North Philly dad was always talking about the Iggles.

He appriciated the Iggles strenths.

Also, that "meet me at the Iggle" was a common thing. I think there was also one outside the Wanamaker's at Cherry Hill Mall (South Jersey).

Yes, we went to that one more often than Cherry Hill when I was little.

i remember my mother and her friend went to Weight Watchers meetings there, and after that, they ate lunch at the Hot Shoppes cafeteria.
