Exclamation The New York Islanders May Be Moving! Possibly Kansas City Bound?!?

-- Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon has talked to New York Islanders owner Charles Wang about building an arena for the NHL team near Citi Field.

"We've had discussions with the Islanders -- in addition to those we've had with Major League Soccer -- about building a sports/entertainment facility near Citi Field,'' the Mets said in a statement Wednesday.

Wilpon told Newsday for its Wednesday editions that he spoke to Wang about trying to develop something "synergistic with Citi Field and a hockey arena.''

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he had yet to speak with the Mets' owners, but was open to the possibility.

"I don't know whether it's the owner or the team using us as a negotiating ploy out on Long Island,'' the mayor said at a news conference Wednesday. "I'd love to have more teams move here. That'd be great.''

Wilpon said it's also possible he could buy the Islanders, according to Newsday.

A spokeswoman for Wang did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Islanders have been trying to get local government to approve a development plan that would give the team a new arena to replace Nassau Coliseum. Wang has become frustrated by lack of action on his proposal and said last fall that he would explore all options -- including relocation.

The team played a preseason game last year in Kansas City, which is seeking an NHL team for a new arena that was built there.

"What I want to do is keep the team here,'' Wang said in October. "Long Island needs the Islanders. It's crazy what's going on, the gamesmanship. Now you've really got to decide, yes or no. If it's no, it's OK. Say it then.

"It's not what I want, but it isn't like people are giving me great choices.''

The Mets moved into Citi Field last year after spending 45 seasons at Shea Stadium. The ballpark is located in the New York City borough of Queens, about 20 miles (a 30-minute drive) from where the Islanders play home games on Long Island, outside the city.

Cool

I really hope the Islanders find a way to stay in Long Island since they have a history and a fan base there. As far as Kansas City being an option I'm not so sure. The NHL put a team in Kansas City once before in the mid 70's. The team (Kansas City Scouts) didn't stick around for long (2 seasons I believe) in part because attendance was horrible in K.C.

Have them come to The Mistake-on-the-Lake because if LeBron goes LeBye here...we'll need some occupation at the Q!

I couldn’t resist bumping this one up.

I’m just surprised this got mentioned. The sports board seems to have been way better back then then it is now.

I don't remember this news and thread at all. The Kansas City Islanders would be like the Utah Jazz.

Would you have followed them in Kansas City or become a Rangers or Devils fan?

I watched quite a few Thrashers games the first few seasons after they moved to Winnipeg. I stopped following them as closely once they no longer had Thrashers players on their team.

Actually Kansas City did have an NHL team, the Kansas City Scouts, that team moved to Colorado becoming the Colorado Rockies, and then on to New Jersey to become the Devils.

I remember them. I wonder if the Islanders would have tried to use the Scouts name or picked a new name.

They built the Sprint Center (now T-Mobile Center) hoping to lure a NHL or NBA team. It never happened for them.

The Penguins threatened to move there in 2006.

Definitely NOT become a Ranger or Devil fan.

They probably would have changed the name, like it didn’t become the Winnipeg Thrashers.

The Islanders are the closest I’ve come to losing a team. The Yankees aren’t going anywhere, and no one wants the Jets.

The Scouts had a great team name and logo, but by 2010 any reference in names or logos to Indians/Native Americans was pretty much taboo.
