Was Dick Shawn miscast as Jack's father

Dick Shawn (born Richard Schulefand in Buffalo) was great. Veteran well accomplished comedian fit the bill well. Sadly died in San Diego, CA in 1987 - Jack Trippers home town. No doubt if Dick was around today he would have been a proud zany member of Bills Mafia !

A little bit of trivia in the episode where he appears as Jack's dad. Near the end of the episode in the Bitro's kitchen he calls Jack, John. Apparently since John was his real name it maybe was not caught by directors but its there.

That is a great catch. That could go either way. Yes he possible called him by his real name and no one caught it. Or it was intentional in the script. Many named John go by nickname Jack, (JFK, etc). So it could have been a simple playful switcheroo in script. I actually have known a few Jack's for many years and never knew there real name was John, cause no one called them John.

I don't know about now but I remember watching this episode when it aired when I was a kid. I remember i didn't like it or Dick Shawn as his dad.

I don't like this episode. But it was when the wheels were coming off and preparing for the spin off. The episodes where Jack's grandfather and dad spontaneously showing up and knowing nothing about Jack was stupid.
