I took these pics of my old house in Toledo's trash and recyclable carts in 2010.

I recently put out my garbage early in the morning just as the NYC Sanitation guys were coming to pick up.

I asked them what they think of these new garbage bins and they said, "We can't stand them. Nobody likes these things. Pain in our asses!"

That's NYC. The all-mighty local politicians love to make laws for the rest of us, but they of course don't follow them. They also make money off them by giving out contracts to enforce them, which they get campaign contributions and kickbacks for. We have a big staff here and they take care of it, so Babalu doesn't have to get his hands dirty.

What stunk was that we had to pay for these new bins.

Years ago they dropped off those Food Scrap & Yard Waste bins for free.

Beginning November 12, 2024, all properties with 1-9 residential units will be required to use bins, 55 gallons or less, with secure lids for trash set out.

If you already use a bin with a secure lid that is 55 gallons or less for trash set out, you may continue to use it until June 2026. After that, you will need to switch to the official NYC Bin.

Separate NYC Bins are available for purchase for recycling and composting though they are not required.

I kind of need a new regular one and a new blue one, but I’m not sure if I should break down and go with these ones.

Weekly trash pickup, bi-weekly recyclables, and weekly separate yard waste pickup that begins in April for me. I'm in the city, and all that needs to be separated; my brother is in the county and his company takes his trash and yard waste all together.

3 containers provided for me, all with attached lids that tend to blow open in the wind. My trash bin is very similar to the one shown in opus' photo.

A few months ago, the collector accidentally dumped mine into his enormous truck. He came to my door to apologize that he couldn't retrieve it, so he arranged for a "new" one to be delivered to me.

Another almost identical one did arrive in good time, but it was a used one: a fairly dirty mess, with badly rusted wheel parts.

From @NYCSanitation

NYC: You MUST separate your compostable material from your trash. Fines begin April 1.

Compostable material includes food scraps, food-soiled paper items & yard waste.

Starting June 1, 2026, properties with 1-9 residential units will be REQUIRED to use only official NYC Bins for trash set out. A warning period will be in effect from June 1 through September 7.

Full enforcement of the NYC Bin requirements for trash will begin Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
