Default The Beatnik

The episode when the Beatnik shows up and woos one of the Bradley daughters... later a famous actor, can anyone quote the poetry he was writing and reciting for her, here?

Seems like there was some pretty good surreal Beat poetry here.

There was also some Beatnik poetry on Beverly Hillbillies, I'd like to track down again.

No! I wouldn't be able to recite the poem, but I'll post a pic. of Bobbie Jo( Pat Woodell) with Dennis Hopper. Also Lori Saunder's Bobbie Jo got into a beatnik phase too in Season 4 Author, Author!!

The supposed 'beatnik' was played by Dennis Hopper who HAD to have known what real beatniks were supposed to look like- yet (despite his flaky poetry) seemed every bit as square as Wally Cleaver! I guess the producers just didn't want to have to show anything vaguely resembling an actual beatnik (unlike the M3S which had Robbie Douglas in a goatee, sweatshirt and sandals the very same year- to say nothing of Maynard Krebs of "Dobie Gillis" renown)

Cool Where are my shades?

Forthwith, the Beat poem:

Berries, Berries
Gooseberries
The Boysenberries
Berries Berries

There, oh, that's right, that was Hazel's beat poetry in the episode where she and the new Baxter folks pretended to be beatniks to discourage Harold.

Well, I tried, guess we have to ask Dennis for the quote.

Which makes it all the more sad that even HAZEL managed to be less square than" Petticoat Junction" re beatnik depiction!

While I like Dennis Hopper, I thought the beatnik character was a real douc##. Smug, condescending, rude—glad he got owned in the end. Talk about having bad taste in men; Bobby Jo deserves a big fat blue ribbon for “most yucky crush on a jerk ever.”

I found this on the Beverly Hillbillies Beat character:

========================================
The first poem I ever memorized was from a
Beverley Hillbillies episode in which (for some reason connected with
the Drysdales) a Beat Poet from San Francisco was staying with the
Clampetts.

One day Granny found the poet standing on his head against a wall. He
told her he was meditating; when she asked why he told her (more or
less), "When I meditate, my brains soar." So she explained that it
was sore because all his blood was rushing to it, and pulled him
down.

He was a bit upset, and told her that was how he wrote his poetry.
She asked if he'd written a poem; he told her he had, and recited it
(and this part I've committed to memory):

Blue cheesecake
A silver spoon in the sand
The seaweed barks at me.

So she turned him upside down again, and left him there to write a
better one.

-George J. Dance

The beatnik episode is a good example of how the urbanite character is shown to be a phony -- contrary to arguments that the CBS rural sitcoms were detrimental to the image of rural folks. There were other examples too, like when Betty Jo's friends from back east try to make fun of the Hooterville residents, yet reveal themselves to be jackasses. As opposed to the series being condescending to rural people, instead we find that the regular characters are well-adjusted. And in many cases attractive of course.

beatnik refers to a member of a 1950s and early-1960s countercultural youth movement that rejected mainstream conformity and consumerism. The subculture celebrated artistic self-expression, jazz music, and eastern philosophy, laying the cultural groundwork for the later hippie generation

Jethro was quite memorable as a wanna be beatnik !
