Robin Hood Episodes

Just saw the Robin Hood episodes, where the Clampetts have returned from their castle in England. Jethro is upset about this and takes to the woods to become Robin Hood, with Elly as Maid Marian. I was thinking this had some pretty spicy content in it for the time, for a family show.

They meet some hippies, who join as Merry Men. They are intrigued because Jethro and his family "smoke crawdads" and are interested in trying this out and "taking a trip". Some cops apprehend Granny and want to take her in, but she says she can't because she's going down to the lake to smoke some crawdads. "But first", she says, "I need a little pot".

Like I said, seems kind of racy for a family show at the time.

Side note: This episode also features Laurel Goodwin as Stella. I know her because I have her autograph on a Star Trek card (she played Yeoman Colt in "The Managerie"). She's also known for being in the Elvis movie "Girls, Girls, Girls".

I like to take notice of who the guest stars are in each episode. This one also featured Alan Reed Jr. (the son of the Fred Flinstone voice actor), and a young Victor French (Mr. Edwards from Little House on the Prairie) as a policeman.

Speaking of racy, did you see the episode where Jethro was trying to be a magician and he opened the cabinet thinking a pretty girl would be inside but it was Miss Jane and his wand went limp? lol I mean how else could you take that?

I've noticed "hidden" things like that in these old shows, Green Achres as well

I remember the episode and the scene, but not that particular detail. Pretty funny. I remember in the earlier episodes, Jethro actually kind of liked Miss Jane back, but then it changed. There was never an explanation for it, but maybe he got more used to the look of the other Hollywood girls.

Yeah I liked Jethro a lot better in the early episodes... he was sweet actually and even though he was simple, he did have some sense and could often figure things out before the rest of the family did, like about the telephone. It seems like when the show went to color his personality was totally overhauled

Yeah, they really turned him into a dunderhead. It was a bit too much, honestly.

Just saw season seven, episode seven, "The Italian Cook". It has another drug reference in it. Jethro hires an Italian chef and they are enjoying the food. Elly passes Jethro some marinara sauce, calling it "red gravy". Jethro says "That ain't red gravy, that's what you call marijuana sauce".

Still seems strange to me to hear that kind of humor on this show.

Watching the show as an adult, there was actually quite a few things like that I notice now lol

Like I said once about Jethro's wand "going limp" when he sees Miss Jane as he's trying to be a magician. Jed and Granny overhear Jethro practicing a proposal to some man outside, and think he's actually proposing to the man lol I remember Mr Drysdale was talking about something, and Jed responds with "molasses!" as in the syrup and Mr Drysdale says, "No I mean it!" I'm thinking Mr Drysdale thought Jed said, "Mole asses!" as in BS!

I might be wrong but I THOUGHT the term "bollix" was used on the show once... I know Wilma Flintstone says it, it's generally considered a bit taboo. It's a British euphemism for "ballocks" meaning testicles, but if you say it in an exclamation it's like saying, "BS!" Or if you say someone "Ballockses something up" it's like saying they "Screwed it up" or "F***ed it up"... The term "bollix" is a less offensive way to say it.

I could be mistaken but I THOUGHT, the other night, Mr Drysdale or someone said, "You just bollixed the whole thing up!"

I seem to have started cataloguing the drug references on this show, so I guess I'll continue. Saw another one last night: Season 7, episode 15, "Drysdale and Friend". Drysdale is jailed in a small town after driving Elly's drunken bear (that he was babysitting). The bear was dressed as a hippie, and they were jailed for transporting Granny's moonshine (which they were using as fuel).

After reading the above, it occurs to me that this show is getting silly.

Anyway, the cop was talking to Sam Drucker about them transporting moonshine, but said that considering how the bear was dressed, he would have thought he would "smoke pot". The most blatant one yet. I guess by that time, it was no longer shocking.

Counterculture themed episodes had begun appearing quite a bit earlier in the b/w era, with Sheldon Epps (Alan Reed Jr.) arriving at the mansion and the storyline going into beatnik lifestyle aspects. So while there were no overt drug inferences then, still the Clampetts were not new to Beverly Hills area natives who didn't fit the mold of their wealthy neighbors.

Over all in Late 50's and into the the 60's tv and movies had NO ISSUE with a scene where they openly TAKE Tranquilizers and sleeping pills, as if they were like taking aspirin

Even Lovey on Gilligans Island has a suit case full of pills

That's a good point. I think back in those days, there was more of an attitude that as long as you had a doctor's prescription, it was okay and legit. Not saying they were completely ignorant by any means - the Rolling Stones sang about it their "Mother's Little Helper" song. But those were more trusting days in general, people even trusted their presidents more.

I like the Robin Hood episodes because of the Depiction of the Hippies !
