Thumbs up The Halloween Show

I really enjoy this episode. It also marked the last great season IMHO. Of course the show was still good but post 1984 it lost some of its greatness like most sitcoms after 4 years.
This episode is almost like a play and its really fun.
The actor who played Mr Bigley appears in at least one more future episode and the trick or treat girl becomes a short term regular in the next season and then disappears.

I love when Jo says "I hate it when you play Columbo"
and
Blair! In horror movies, the wimperer always gets it first!

The Halloween Show" (Season 5, Episode 6) really does feel like a stage play, thanks to that classic "locked-in" atmosphere at Edna's Edibles. You hit the nail on the head regarding the cast—it’s a perfect bridge between the show's early days and its transition into the mid-80s.

Here is the scoop on those guest stars you mentioned:

The Legendary Ian Wolfe: You are spot on. At nearly 90 years old during filming, Wolfe played Mr. Bigley (the local "ghoul" who was actually just an eccentric neighbor named Mr. Lazzerini). He returned just a few weeks later in the Season 5 Christmas episode as the same character, proving he was a fan favorite.

Kelly Affinado: The "trick-or-treat girl" was played by a young Pamela Segall (now Pamela Adlon). She wasn't just a one-off; she became a recurring foil in Season 5, often extorting the girls or causing trouble. She eventually vanished because the writers felt the "Core Four" dynamic was too strong to break up with a permanent fifth member.

The "Columbo" and Horror Quips: Those lines perfectly capture the Jo vs. Blair dynamic. Jo’s blue-collar cynicism clashing with Blair’s "horror movie logic" (which she likely learned from watching movies in a private screening room) is exactly why that era was the show's peak.

By 1984, the show started shifting away from the "school" atmosphere and into more adult themes, which is usually when sitcoms lose that magic "lightning in a bottle" feeling you’re describing.

Personally, I loved the show from the beginning to the end. And I never thought the show lost its magic. I love the later years when the girls are adults. To me, the show still had "lightning in a bottle" feeling and it still had that magic.

To me, the show was still great post 1984 and still had that greatness about it. Personally, my least favorite season is season 1. However, I love the show from the beginning to the end. So it had a lot of great seasons after the Halloween episode.
