Movie "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" Remains at #1 during 3rd Weekend

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Powers to $372 Million Globally, Project Hail Mary Hits $420 Million
by Rebecca Rubin
April 5, 2026

It’s-a blockbuster, again! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie towered over the global box office with $372.5 million, including a notable $182.4 million internationally.

Those ticket sales easily capture the title for the biggest worldwide debut of the year over Amazon MGM’s space odyssey Project Hail Mary, which bowed to $33.1 million overseas and $97.2 million worldwide in March.

Landing in second place, Project Hail Mary has also been a draw in Imax, where the blockbuster has earned $73.6 million to date (including $5 million this weekend).

It continues to dazzle the box office with $42.1 million from 86 overseas markets in its third weekend of release. That marks a scant 23% decline in ticket sales from last weekend. So far, the blockbuster has grossed $203.6 million overseas and $420.7 million globally.

A24’s dark comedy The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, started strong in third place with $14.4 million from 3,087 screens.

The Drama also debuted overseas with $13.6 million for a global tally of $28 million. That’s an encouraging worldwide opening for an original adult-oriented film, especially against its budget of around $28 million.

Disney’s animated Pixar comedy Hoppers landed at No. 4 with $5.8 million in its fifth weekend of release, an unsurprising 52% hit as family crowds overwhelmingly opted to divert their attention to the cinematic adventures of Mario and friends.

Hoppers has generated $149.6 million domestically and $332 million worldwide, a decent showing that’s not quite near the box office heights of Pixar’s greats.

Reminders of Him rounded out the top five with $2.3 million in its fourth frame.

Universal’s romantic drama, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, has grossed $45 million in North America and $79 million globally against a $25 million budget.

Historical drama A Great Awakening took sixth place with $2.1 million from 1,289 screens.

The film follows the unlikely friendship between Ben Franklin and the preacher George Whitefield.

Elsewhere, the Warner Bros. horror film They Will Kill You cratered at No. 7 with $1.9 million in its second weekend of release. That’s a 61% drop from its terrible $4.9 million debut.

The movie, which cost $20 million, has grossed $8.8 million domestically and $15.2 million worldwide.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Scores $69 Million in Second Weekend, You, Me and Tuscany Opens to $8 Million
by Rebecca Rubin
April 12, 2026

Universal’s animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remained No. 1 at the domestic box office, collecting $69 million from 4,284 North American theaters in its second weekend of release. Those ticket sales mark a 48% decline from its debut, a strong hold for a blockbuster of this scale.

So far, the video game adaptation has grossed $308 million domestically and $629 million globally. After just 12 days in theaters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has overtaken Project Hail Mary as the highest-grossing movie of the year.

Project Hail Mary remained a box office force in second place with $24.5 million in its fourth outing, a mere 21% decline from the prior weekend.

So far, the space epic starring Ryan Gosling has generated a mighty $256.6 million in North America and $510 million worldwide. The $200 million-budgeted tentpole has become a major hit for Amazon MGM at a pivotal time for the studio. For the first time since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, the company is unveiling a full theatrical slate in 2026.

Third place went to A24’s dark comedy The Drama, which earned $8.7 million from 3,817 screens in its second weekend of release, dropping only 38% from its debut.

The R-rated film, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has grossed $30 million domestically and $65 million worldwide. The film is turning into a word-of-mouth hit by inspiring plenty of conversation over the film’s central premise: about a couple whose relationship is tested after they reveal the worst thing they’ve ever done.

The Universal romantic comedy You, Me and Tuscany, starring Halle Bailey, opened in fourth place with $8 million from 3,151 theaters. The movie also earned $1.1 million at the international box office for a global start of $9.1 million.

Audiences embraced the film, which earned an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls. Opening weekend crowds were 80% female, while 53% were between 18 and 34 years old.

Pixar’s Hoppers rounded out the top five with $4.1 million in its sixth frame. The kid-friendly film is winding down with $157.1 million domestically and $354.4 million globally to date.

Although Hoppers was hailed as a return to form for Pixar (the animation empire has struggled to launch an original hit), the movie ran out of steam faster than expected; Hoppers might only barely break even in its theatrical run against its $150 million budget.

However, Disney expects the creature feature to draw audiences on Disney+ and sell plenty of toys inspired by the cute animals in the movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Easily Tops Charts with $35 Million, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Debuts to $13.5 Million
by Brent Lang
April 19, 2026

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie easily retained its box office crown in its third weekend of release, topping the charts with $35 million. The Universal and Illumination release is already the year’s highest-grossing film, having earned $355.2 million domestically and $747.5 million globally, and seems destined to eclipse the $1 billion mark worldwide.

At this rate, expect the studios to get more Mario into production as fast as they can level up and Nintendo will allow it.

Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary also shone brightly in its fifth weekend of release, picking up $20.5 million for a second place finish. That brings the sci-fi adventure’s domestic gross to a stellar $285.1 million.

However, the continued success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary made it difficult for newcomers to gain much traction.

Warner Bros. and New Line's Lee Cronin’s The Mummy had to settle for third in its debut weekend, earning a so-so $13.5 million.

Horror maestros James Wan and Jason Blum produced through their production banners, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions, and it continues their run of monster movies.

In its third weekend of release, A24’s buzzy relationship comedy The Drama took fourth place, earning $4.8 million.

The indie film, which stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has earned an impressive $39.7 million.

Rounding out the top five, Universal’s rom-com You, Me & Tuscany picked up $3.8 million to bring its haul to $14.4 million after two weeks in theaters.

The weekend’s other new wide release, Magnolia’s Normal, took seventh place, earning $2.5 million. The action film stars Bob Odenkirk as a small town sheriff who stumbles on a larger conspiracy following a local bank robbery.

In limited release, Focus Features’ Lorne, a documentary about “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, debuted to $270,000 from 415 theaters, while A24’s Mother Mary, earned $168,063 from just five locations.

regarding The Mummy, if my daughter was missing for 8 years and was found looking like a mummy I would have to send her to heaven.
Just the most ridiculous premise I have heard in a while and I can usually go along with a lot.
