"Project Hail Mary" Remains at #1 in 2nd Weekend
Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Scores Biggest Debut of Year with $80.5 Million, Sets Amazon MGM Record
by Rebecca Rubin 3/22/26 Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary lived up to its name, collecting a stellar $80.5 million in its box office launch to deliver a much-needed theatrical win for Amazon MGM. This marks the studio’s biggest opening ever, shattering the record set by 2023’s Creed III with $58 million. It’s also the largest debut of the year above February’s slasher sequel Scream 7 with $63 million. Project Hail Mary also scored at the international box office with $60.4 million from 82 markets for a global start of $140.9 million. Disney’s Pixar adventure Hoppers slid to second place after two weekends at No. 1. The kid-friendly film added $18 million, bringing ticket sales to $120.4 million domestically and $242 million globally after three weekends of release. Third place went to the Indian action epic Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, which earned $9.5 million from just 987 locations. According to distributor Moviegoers Entertainment, this is the biggest opening weekend ever for a Bollywood film in North America, overtaking the benchmark set by 2023’s Pathaan with $6.9 million. Newcomer Disney and Searchlight’s horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, opened in fourth place with $9 million from 3,010 North American theaters. The film started slow overseas with $2.8 million from 21 territories for a global launch of $11.9 million. Universal’s romantic drama Reminders of Him rounded out the top five with $8 million in its second weekend of release. The film, based on Colleen Hoover’s hit book, has generated $33 million domestically and $54 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. Meanwhile The Bride! sank to No. 15 with $275,000 in its third outing, a shocking 86% decline from the prior weekend. Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Flies High with $54.5 Million in 2nd Weekend, They Will Kill You Flops with $5 Million
by Brent Lang March 29, 2026 Project Hail Mary easily topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend, bringing in a heavenly $54.5 million. It is shaping up to be the year’s first true blockbuster, having already earned $164.3 million domestically. Project Hail Mary only dropped 32% from its debut weekend, signaling the film will have staying power. Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers captured second place for the weekend, taking in another $12.2 million. Through its first four weeks of release, the family film is projected to gross $138.6 million in North America and $297.6 million worldwide. The weekend’s only major new release, They Will Kill You, was D.O.A., earning an anemic $5 million domestically from 2,778 locations for a third-place finish. Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, a Bollywood thriller, came in fourth with $4.7 million, pushing its domestic total to a muscular $22.8 million and nearly outpacing They Will Kill You despite the fact that it was showing on almost 2,000 fewer screens. Rounding out the Friday top five was Reminders of Him with $4.7 million domestically, bringing its gross to $41.1 million. Universal produced the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s romantic novel to the tune of $25 million. In limited release, Focus Features premiered The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, a look at the risks and potential of artificial intelligence from the filmmakers behind Navalny and Everything Everywhere All at Once. It grossed $650,000 in 786 locations. Neon also debuted Alpha, a body horror film from Titane’s Julia Ducournau that earned just over $121,000 from 218 screens. Universal also revived 2001’s The Mummy Returns. The adventure film grossed $600,000 from 1,300 venues, pushing its total to $202.7 million.
