“Lucy Goes To The Hospital”:
Episode #56 (Syndicated episode #51) VHS: On some tapes, it is attached to “Lucy Is Enceinte (Pregnant)”. On the Columbia House tapes, it’s attached to episodes #49, #50 & #52. DVD: On the Season 2 box set, it is attached to episodes #49-54 as well as the My Favorite Husband episode “Liz Becomes A Sculpturess” along with Behind The Scenes Featurette: Except from Laughs, Luck…and Lucy by Jess Oppenheimer. On the blu ray set, it is attached to along with bonus features like flubs. Air Date: Mon. 1/19/53 Notes: When this episode aired, it was watched by a lot of people. It garnered a record 71.7 rating, meaning 71.7% of all television households at the time were tuned in to view the program. (Credit goes to I Love Lucy Fandom Wiki). It even got more viewers than Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration the next day. When CBS FOX video released this to hone video the first time in 1989, unlike for other episodes, they didn’t include a brief summary. Instead, they said how important this episode is and that it got more viewers than the inauguration. Also, back in the 50s, this episode not only almost didn’t air due to the then-controversial nature (how times have changed), people were convinced it was the end of the show. Desi brought in three religious people who looked at the script and approved of it so CBS decided to air it but they didn’t want the word “pregnant” mentioned, so they used the word Enceinte which is French for pregnant somehow thinking no one would notice. Originally, the scene when Lucy says she is ready and the gang tries to get ready to leave wasn’t colorized when shown on the colorized versions of I Love Lucy Christmas Special until 2015.. Also, I can definitely say that I remember when the baby episodes aired on Nick (and later TV Land), they showed “Lucy is Enceinte” BEFORE the five flashback episodes. However local syndication like WNYW did the opposite however the first scenes in those flashback episodes were edited out. Also, I do wonder if Ricky being dressed as an African voodoo witch doctor would fly today. Probably not. No transcript is available. |
