Regarding the Transfer Students at Mayfield High School

On LITB, we would occasionally see new students, who had transferred to Mayfield High. I remember that there was Dudley McMillan, the somewhat naive son of one of June’s own high school friends and classmates. Then there was Scott, the son of affluent parents, who pretty much let the privileged Scott do what he wanted. (Come to think if it, Scott would have been an ideal candidate for membership with The Barons, Mayfield High’s group of spoiled and entitled nihilists.)

Of course, who could forget Wayne Gregory, a/k/a “The Mustachioed Fop,” the “somewhat” narcissistic transfer student whom the ditsy Julie Foster dumped the steady and dependable (and not to mention, at times, the less-than-exciting) Wally Cleaver for the flamboyant Wayne? It’s too bad that Wayne never appeared on another episode of LITB. I would have liked to have seen the self-absorbed Wayne deal with Eddie and Lumpy.

I’m trying to remember if there were any girls, who transferred to Mayfield High during the show’s six-year-run? Was the student portrayed by the late and very beautiful Anna Capri on LITB (as Eddie Haskell ‘s girlfriend) supposed to be a transfer student?

I believe there were also several transfer students at The Grant Avenue School; the very pretty girl with the southern accent that Beaver was supposed to go to a dance with and the other pretty girl who caused both Beaver and Gilbert Bates to be “struck by the thunderbolt” and probably prompted both boys’ parents to send them on a bus trip across America.

Can you think of any other transfer students at either Mayfield High or The Grant Avenue School?

"Wally's Dream Girl," Ginny Townsend, was a recent transfer from Indianapolis.

In "The All-Night Party" Kathy Gregory, the poor dunkee in the fountain outside the country club, was dubbed as a "new girl."

There were many students who appeared at Grant Avenue School or Mayfield High, and were never seen again. Klepto Kenneth Purcell, Mary Margaret Matthews (who many of us would have liked to have seen again, but the series ended). Melinda Neilson, the transfer from Charlotte.,,the list goes on...and on...

Melinda was from Charleston, not Charlotte. Ward assumed Charleston SC when Beaver asked where Charleston is—totally slighting Charleston WV, but I digress!

The accent isn’t WV—-AFAIK!

Benson that I mentioned purposely didn’t mention the state, despite Benson working for the governor!

It’s just like Hooterville on Green Acres/Petticoat Junction….it was on purpose for a state never to be mentioned. Towns like Hooterville & Mayfield are meant to be like “anywhere, USA”. With the advent of Internet, of something on a series is mentioned just once, like maybe the name of a state, or a character’s favorite TV show to watch….believe me, we ALL would know. “Secrecy” being on purpose may be just a way of keeping us talking about it.

Oh, yeah -- most of the old Screen Gems shows -- we don't know what state they were in.

--Father Knows Best - Springfield

--Donna Reed Show - Hilldale

--Dennis the Menace - town name/state never mentioned in the show (but Jay North crossed over as a guest, as Dennis, on the Donna Reed Show.)

--Hazel - town name/state never mentioned

--Bewitched - town name might not be known; state could be New York or Connecticut. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Soap Operas - most mention no state

In addition to the other Paul Henning shows mentioned before, and Benson, with Henning's other show, the Bev. Hillibiiles, I don't think we know what state they were originally from before their moved to Beverly Hills.

Unless I'm mistaken, an early working title prior to Bewitched's debut was "The Witches of Westport." Which would point to Westport Connecticut or possibly Westport Massachusetts (though I think in the Dick Sargent era it's implied that the drive to Salem Mass. is not a short one, so likely Connecticut). A search reveals the following, though not set in stone:

"The show’s setting is a fictionalized version of Westport, Connecticut."

We may need a Bewitched fan to let us know if either "Westport" or the state of CT is explicitly stated at any time in the series.

Well, on the legendary “Dark Shadows,” we knew right from the start that Vicky Winters was on that train to take the job as young David Collins’s governess at the stately Collinwood mansion, located in scenic Collinsport, Maine.

PS Vicky should have never gotten off that train in Collinsport, Maine. And, do you think June was a faithful DS viewer?

I kinda think it was just a mid-west town until it was mentioned about surfing and going to the beach. Maybe California because in not one episode does it ever rain, like in CA where it rains about 7 days a year.

I think Jerry Mathers said, in his book, that all the inconsistencies on the location were on purpose. For some reason, it was just Mayfield USA.

In the modern era, The Middle took place in Orson, Indiana. Real state, fictional town.

When they start using real towns and cities, how far do they go? Naming real stores and landmarks? On Lucy, they opted not to (Phipps Dept. Store). On One Day at a Time, there were some comments early on about inconsistencies about Indianapolis. So they went to the trouble of getting some actual I-70 footage in the opening for several seasons.
