Production no. 16160 - "Double Date"
Wally has a girlfriend, Carolyn, who's just moved to Mayfield. Their date pland have gone awry since she has to stay with her sister, Susan, who's Beaver's age, but they're worried about leaving her alone in a new town. Carolyn, after meeting Beaver, has an idea that Susan might date Beaver and the four of them could go out. Wally still views Beaver as a little kid, and initially balks. Beaver overhears a conversation to that effect, and when Wally proposes the idea to him, he accepts immediately, surprising Wally. At the last minute, Susan rejects the idea of going. At Wally's suggestion, Beaver calls her to convince her to go, but it's still a no-go. Production no. 16161 - "Beaver Joins a Record Club" Gilbert convinces Beaver to join a record club, and, after negotiating an allowance, Beaver mismanages their offers and ends up owing $17. He goes to Ward, and they agree on a payment plan; Ward writes a letter to the company. Production no. 16162 - "Tell It to Ella" Beaver is late coming home on a school night, so his parents ground him on those nights. Beaver finds out about some jalopy races that his friends can attend. He pleads his case to Ward, who sticks to his guns. Enter Eddie, who suggests he write to a newspaper column. Liking that idea, he does. But later, the columnist takes Ward's side. This generates anger from Beaver's friends, whose parents have seen the column and ground them on school nights, too. Beaver confesses to his parents that he wrote the letter. Production no. 16163 - "Bachelor at Large" Last season Eddie quit school--this season, he moves away from home and rents an apartment. Beaver and Wally visit Eddie, but he's not home; they get a gander at his mess of an apartment, and a dog he has, due to being lonely. Eddie has painted a totally different picture of his life away from home. Since the landlady showed the boys Eddie's apartment, Wally asks her to contact Eddie's parents, so they can convince him to return home. |

The record club episode is a rather unique one, and a favorite of mine from season 6. Careless Beaver doesn't send those postcards back to the company, and keeps accepting automatically sent packages from the company that contain additional records, all the while increasing his balance due. When he's notified by mail from the company about the $17.60 that he owes, he goes to Ward and they work out a solution. At episodes end, Beaver gets another letter from the company saying that his account is now paid up and in good standing, and he will soon receive the next package containing another record. Beaver then calls for Ward and yells, "Hey Dad, they're doin' it to me again!"
![]() From today's point of view, $17.60 isn't a lot of money, but to an 8th grader back in 1962, I suppose it was. |
