Rewatching some season 5 episodes, I am coming to the conclusion that it was overall a weak season, the weakest of the series. It captured Beaver at an awkward adolescent phase, and the show itself seemed caught in a strange limbo between child-related plots and more adult ones. The standout episodes were few, among them "Sweatshirt Monsters," "Nobody Loves Me," and "Beaver's Fear," but there were also retreads of ideas that were done better in earlier seasons. Much of the acting seemed forced - June seemed to be "phoning it in" much of the time and while Ken Osmond was always good, his Eddie was becoming almost an over-the-top caricature of itself. Opening each episode with a "prologue" followed by the "whistling chorus" version of the theme music just didn't work for me - it was corny and seemed to underline the fact that the stories just weren't that interesting.
I watched part of a season 6 episode to compare, and the awkwardness of the previous season is now gone. Season 6 flows smoothly and has a more mature, confident feel. There is new incidental music as well as a more sophisticated, jazzy version of the theme music. Beaver has outgrown his awkward phase and is an appealing and funny teen actor. Wally is as good as ever and many of the plots are now focusing on him and his friends, with Beaver on the sidelines as an ironic Greek chorus. Ward and June are no longer as stiff as they were in season 5. Thanks to intelligent changes, LITB was able to solve its season 5 problems and finish in good style. Thoughts? |

Season 6 episodes actually have a music score--which is unique for a sitcom.
I just wrote a synopsis of "A Night in the Woods". A perfect example of going to great lengths to set up a situation. All four boys' want to go camping but their fathers are all working on Saturday--one just finding out he's going to a wedding--and can't take them. Why not just have the boys plan to rope Wally into taking them? The more I wrote, the more I found things to criticize about that episode. And my nomination for the worst episode of the series--"Beaver the Babysitter"--is a season 5 episode. |
