...win the lottery? She completely doubled down when people criticized it and the ratings dropped precipitously. She must have known it was a disaster pretty quickly, and I'm sure most of the people must have known it would be horrible even before it was implemented.

By Season 9, the show was largely a "one-woman show," and while most of the cast and crew reportedly knew the lottery plot was a mistake, few could stop it.
Roseanne's Absolute Control: By the final season, Roseanne Barr had solidified total creative authority. She notoriously referred to writers by numbers rather than names and fired those who didn't align with her vision. This environment made it nearly impossible for anyone on staff to successfully argue against the lottery storyline. The Cast's Disconnection: John Goodman (Dan) was largely absent for a significant portion of the season, and when he was present, the characters were often separated by bitter plotlines. Fans and critics noted the cast felt like they were "going through the motions" in a show that had become unrecognizable. Ratings and Critic Backlash: Ratings did drop as the show abandoned its blue-collar roots for "ludicrous gimmicks" like fighting terrorists on a train and spa days with the wealthy. Critics called it a "Viking funeral" for a once-great series. The "Escape" Defense: Roseanne later framed the lottery win as an intentional "fantasy" within the show’s universe—a story the character Roseanne wrote to cope with Dan’s death. Some view this as a last-minute attempt to "course-correct" once she realized how poorly the season was being received. Immediate Retconning: The failure was so widely acknowledged that when the 2018 revival (Season 10) was developed, the writers' first move was to explicitly ignore and "retcon" the lottery win entirely. Do you think the series finale monologue managed to redeem the season at all, or did it just make the previous 20 episodes feel like a waste of time |
