to see if the guy who owns the gas station would hire Bud or not according to dad who said he would.

Two things.
1. I barely remember, but do remember full service gas stations. Bud's uniform was so clean and I assume white (since its B&W), but I think I saw some wearing that nice of a uniform back in the day.

2. Was Bud a freshmen in college already or just a senior in high school? Maybe I am making to much out of the job title of assistant manager, but I would think it would be more than a high school kid could handle.

1. Yes, they had full service stations when I was a kid in south New Jersey. I'm told New Jersey still has them. You ran over a hose which rang a bell for the attendant. On FKB I think the price on the sign was something like 23 cents.

2. Bud graduated from high school at the end of the fifth season--so, yes, in the service station episode he would have been a college freshman.
