Actually, the family explained that they were using George’s money for a specific long-term exit strategy:
Education and Training: The husband in the family (William Barnes) revealed they were using the money to pay for additional education and job training. The "Upturn": They mentioned that because of this mysterious "benefactor," their fortunes had recently taken an upturn, and they were preparing to move out of the dilapidated building very soon. Covering Bills: The monthly $100 (which would be roughly $500 today) was also helping them keep their current bills paid while they focused on that training. The episode establishes that George had taken a vow as a child that if he ever "made it," he would ensure whoever lived in his old apartment didn't have to suffer through the "hard Christmases" he endured. By the end of the episode, the family is portrayed as being on the verge of their own "moving on up" moment thanks to his secret support. |
