Willona and Bookman had VERY good chemistry, it's a shame that they NEVER dated. Mrs. Bookman had good chemistry with Bookman but in all honesty Willona and Bookman would have made a good couple and even could have co adopted Penny. It would have been nice for Penny to have an adopted Mother AND an adopted Father. Bookman even pretended to be Willona's Husband to try to get Willona a better chance at adopting Penny until Michael having no idea that Bookman lied about being Willona's Husband told Mrs. Dobbs that Willona wasn't married and Mrs. Dobbs was disgusted because she assumed that Willona put Bookman up to lying that he was Willona's Husband when Willona didn't even KNOW that Bookman pulled that stunt! It would have been nice if Willona and Bookman had gotten married for real on the show. 😀

While Nathan Bookman and Willona Woods never dated, their complex dynamic—ranging from bitter insults to genuine acts of friendship—became a fan-favorite element of Good Times.
Here is a look at the relationship between Willona and Bookman that fueled those "what if" scenarios: Frenemies-to-Friends Evolution: Their relationship began with deep hostility, characterized by Willona's frequent insults regarding Bookman's weight and laziness, often calling him "Booger". However, by the later seasons, they developed a mutual respect. Bookman even offered encouragement to Florida's fiancé, Carl Dixon, regarding his cancer diagnosis, showing a more human side that Willona acknowledged. The Adoption Ploy: In the Season 5 episode "The Evans Get Involved: Part 4," Bookman demonstrated his loyalty by posing as Willona’s husband to help her adopt Penny. Though Michael accidentally exposed the lie to social worker Hortense Dobbs, the gesture proved Bookman was willing to risk his reputation for Willona and Penny. "Willona, the Other Woman": The chemistry you noticed was directly addressed in the Season 5 episode "Willona, the Other Woman". Bookman’s wife, Violet, became convinced they were having an affair after finding Bookman in Willona's apartment without his pants (he had spilled wine and Willona was cleaning them). The episode played on the absurdity of them as a couple, with Willona bursting into laughter at the very suggestion. A "What If" Stability: Your point about Penny having a father figure is compelling, as Penny was an abandoned child seeking roots. While Willona did have other serious romantic interests, such as Frank Mason, she famously rejected his marriage proposal because she feared the transition would be too unstable for Penny. Ultimately, the show chose to keep Bookman married to the "firebrand" Violet, while Willona remained a fiercely independent single mother, maintaining a playful, bickering friendship with the building superintendent. |
