I just saw his first Tonight Show appearance, very unfunny. I would have rather seen two segments with Selma Diamond, who didn't get enough time.

He got better in later years. Johnny Carson must have liked him. He didn't get called over to sit down, but he got the official Carson nod, affirmative smile and a handshake. It made his career.

Off topic: I think another comedian Carson "made" was Rodney Dangerfield. There are earlier appearances for him on Ed Sullivan's show, on Youtube, and he's not as funny as later, on the Tonight Show. Probably got better writers.

He bowled Carson over, and almost always got called over.
