I happened upon this rarity on Youtube - an originally live, color presentation of the Tonight Show. The remote feed from Times Square still used black and white cameras. But the color videotape presentation from that time is, again, a rarity.

There is very little footage from his 1962 debut (which, other than some still photos, itself is lost) to mid-1972 left. Per Wikipedia there are 33 complete episodes intact, and most of them are probably black and white film kinescopes.
