“The Gong Show” is indeed classified as q game show, I guess because there’s a cash prize awarded at the end.

Not unlike “Queen for a Day,” also classified as such.

Both are somewhat satiric, poking a little fun at the genre.

I always thought The Gong Show was mad, cracked, sick and crazy. (The title of humor magazines). There were times watching the show when the audience was groaning over a bad act that I would shout at the TV "THROW THE BUM OUT!" I also remember when David Letterman was a judge. It was before he went on to bigger and better things in late night TV.

I remember that era, and I think Letterman was just starting. He was on the crew at Mary Tyler Moore’s short-lived (and deservedly so) variety show “Mary.” That was painful as far as attempting comedy! But apparently Letterman was noticed, and the rest is history.
