I also remembered reading Love Me Do transcript many years ago, now I can't find it

Since they obviously weren’t going to kill Skippy, this episode works even better if you bring in Greg a few months earlier and set him up as Alex’s friend and let the audience get to know him. Then when you kill him it’s an even stronger emotional gut punch, instead of with someone we never saw before.

Something along the lines of Growing Pains, who had Matthew Perry on 2 previous episodes before they knocked him off.
