Default I Write The Songs

NOT written by Barry Manilow. He’s such a liar.

>>>“I Write the Songs” was written by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston in 1975 while on a brief hiatus from the surf rock group <<<

He's not the only one. You didn’t hear it from me, but I have it on good authority that Billy Joel did in fact start the fire.

"I am music, and I write the songs."

It looks as though I'm the only one who'll defend Manilow directly on this point. Opus, you may wish to think in the abstract...
"I" refers to Music, not poor Barry himself...!

Anyway, there were scads of singers whose most popular songs were written by others. And that will always be the case, most likely...!

I have that 45 someplace, but looking at an image of it online, the writing credit is to Bruce Johnston.

Bruce Johnston may be the songwriter but Barry Manilow gave it the right arrangement to turn it into a hit.

David Cassidy's version in comparison, sounds quite different. It has more of a bluesy/soul sound to it.

I like Can’t Smile Without You. But he’s such a liar I’d bet that he has definitely smiled without me.
