Since you have to assume that Bonnie Franklin had essentially " complete creative control" after the second season, the way her character was written was the way she wanted her to be written. I always thought her character's being difficult and unpleasant was a mirror showing Ms. Franklin's true personality.

I don't recall her insulting her ex-husband, but I do recall, in one episode, she
told Barbara and Julie, "Whatever problems we had, or still have, he is still
your father and he's a damn good one."

Well, she did occasionally (once, in terms of having sex, she called him Speedy Gonzalez).

She wasn’t the idealistic 50s/60s sitcom mom, but those days were gone. More Norman Lear type realism was in.

And it’s not like she went around slapping Julie and Alex or anything. Oh wait, bad example…..
