He was one of my idols when I was a kid. I remember my whole family would sit around the tv and watch Gunsmoke. I still catch an episode now and again in reruns and the show still holds up. And it's because of James Arness. I used to love it when the announcer would say "And Starring James Arness as Matt Dillon." That pretty much said it all.

(BTW, actress Susan Silo (see my avatar) told me that her role on the Gunsmoke episode "The Long Night" was one of her favorite roles.)

I grew up watching Gunsmoke on Saturday nights. At the time there were about 500 westerns on tv but Gunsmoke was a cut above all of them! RIP Mister Dillon.
