After a decade-long gap, "Gavin & Stacey" is returning for a one-off Christmas special, the BBC has announced.

James Corden, who along with Ruth Jones co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in the hit comedy show, revealed the news on his Twitter account Monday night.

Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, who played the titular Gavin and Stacey, as well as other major characters played by Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman, will all reprise their roles for the special, which will air later this year.





In a press release, Corden said: “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin & Stacey -- where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special.

We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again, and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

"Gavin & Stacey" Tops Out at 17.7M Viewers, Making it Britain’s Biggest TV Show Since 2010

The BBC pulled off something pretty remarkable on Christmas Day. In an age where traditional television viewing has been blown apart by streaming, the British broadcaster aired the UK’s most-watched TV show since 2010.

For this, it can thank James Corden and his writing partner Ruth Jones, who revived their smash hit comedy "Gavin & Stacey" after nine years to huge success over the festive season.




Some 11.5M people watched "Gavin & Stacey" go out live on BBC One, and with a week’s worth of catchup viewing, its audience has grown to a whopping 17.1M viewers, according to the BBC.

This makes it the biggest non-sport show on British television since the finale of Simon Cowell’s talent contest "The X Factor" in December 2010, which was watched by 17.7M viewers.




"Gavin & Stacey" has also generated 4.4M views in its first week on the BBC’s iPlayer streaming service, meaning the comedy is also making its mark online.

BBC director of content Charlotte Moore said: “Gavin & Stacey has been a phenomenal hit this Christmas breaking records to become the biggest scripted show of the decade.”

Beloved BBC sitcom "Gavin & Stacey" is set to return for another a bite at the Christmas cherry.

Deadline understands the sitcom from James Corden and Ruth Jones will film a new episode over the summer with a view to airing at Christmas time this year, five years on from the previous ratings-topping special.

We are told the series is in development/pre-production and cameras will roll in a few months time on the show, which is produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden.

James Corden has emotionally declared that he's penned "Gavin & Stacey" for the last time.

Corden, alongside his writing partner Ruth Jones, earlier this year announced a final festive special of the much-loved comedy series set to air on BBC this Christmas Day.



The former "Late Late Show" host, appearing on "The Chris Evans Breakfast Show" on Virgin Radio, confessed that the gravity of concluding the show had just sunk in, admitting: "Last night we were like 'oh that's it now. We've finished. We'll never write anything that Pam says again."

"We'll never write interior Gwen's house. We'll never come up with an interesting thing that Bryn's done. We just looked at each other and we were like 'wow - isn't that amazing?'".

On Wednesday night, "Gavin & Stacey" aired its final episode on the BBC. The cast, including James Corden and Ruth Jones, were emotional as they discussed the finale at a press launch ahead of the episode’s release.

“The more I’ve thought about it, I wonder if actually a lesson in patience,” Corden said about the show’s enduring popularity. “Particularly in television or the way that we consume stuff, we talk about content, we talk about consumers, and we talk about speed. And we’ve decided that speed is the single most important thing in everything that you can do.”



He continued: “I ordered it then, and it arrived then, and I watched it then. You get young people now watching things at twice the speed that it was ever meant to be formatted at. Here’s a show that ended 15 years ago, waited 10 years to tell another hour of the story, and waited five more years to end it completely.

Maybe the lesson for all of us, for the people that write and talk about television, is actually time and patience and care might be the right answer for things to have longevity.”





Jones thanked Corden for their partnership, tearing up as she told him she loved him.

“I think what has remained throughout all of the episodes is this sense of love: love between friends, love between family members, conventional boy-meets-girl stories and unconventional relationships [too],” she said, while Corden held her hand.

She added: “That’s remained the same and the lack of cynicism has remained the same. Basically, all the characters in the show really do love each other. Call it boring, but they do.”

"Gavin & Stacey: The Finale" Rips Up UK Record Books with Nearly 20 Million Viewers

"Gavin & Stacey: The Finale" is ripping up the record books in the UK.

According to the BBC, the concluding episode of the British sitcom epic has now been watched by 19.3 million people, which makes it the most-watched scripted show since these records began some 23 years ago.

It has smashed the show’s own record from the 2019 Christmas special — hich reached 18.5M viewers in 28 days — in less than half the time, having premiered just nine days ago.




The final episode on Christmas Day was watched by 12.3M viewers live, beating the previous Christmas special from five years before, and since then another 7M have come to the 90-minute finale.

Corden and Jones said: “We are completely overwhelmed by the audience response to our show and to these astonishing viewing figures. Gavin & Stacey really does belong to the audience and we are beyond thrilled that so many people enjoyed watching it this Christmas. A huge thank you to Charlotte Moore and the BBC for backing us these past 17 years.”
