Default C.P.O. Sharkey

Anyone else like this show from the 70's with Don Rickles? I almost seemed like an updated Gomer, this time from the NCO's viewpoint.

funny you should mention that, because the producers probably thought so, too, because in the final season, they reused plots from "G.P." on 3 or 4 eps. of "Sharkey"

I don't remember it as being very funny. Rickles was no Frank Sutton as an actor. I never thought of it as being Gomer Pyle from the opposite point of view but I guess it was. Aaron Ruben was in charge, I think, but it just seemed he was on cruise control, older, tired, and without the talented cast this time. I do remember that some of the bits with the tall, stupid corporal (?) were funny, but he would mainly say something stupid and then just stand there with a blank look while Rickles ripped into him with a Rickles type routine. Some of it was funny but it didn't have the writing or the great chemistry of the cast with Gomer. It might have been done on video tape instead of film too and that added to the cheap feel to it. So, mildly funny at first but it wouldn't hold up to repeated viewings like the Gomer show did.
Rickles did some good comedy guest shots in the 60s on other shows but didn't work very well as a lead in this one. The show was kinda funny but mainly because of the tall guy. Some of those bits were very funny but the rest was very routine. Maybe I'm being too hard on it, but still don't think it was anywhere near as good a show as Gomer Pyle USMC.
