Generally the agreed-upon definition of a spin-off is taking a character or characters from an existing show and sending him/her/them off to another show. You took Rhoda from MTM and sent her off to her own situation. Same with Phyllis.
CBS at the time wanted another comedy along the lines of BH and PJ, and approached Henning, who was so busy he urged Jay Sommers to do one. Jay ended up resurrecting his 1950 comedy and setting it in the same Hooterville area as PJ. I assume he and Henning agreed to liberally cross the characters over. From Wikipedia: "The show is set in the same television universe as Henning's Petticoat Junction, featuring such towns as Hooterville, Pixley, Crabwell Corners, and Stankwell Falls, as well as sharing characters such as Joe Carson, Fred and Doris Ziffel, Sam Drucker, Newt Kiley, and Floyd Smoot." The shows are undeniably associated and intertwined, no doubt about that! |

I just always saw it as both Green Acres and Petticoat Junction were spin-offs of the Beverly Hillbillies

Well according to ChatGPT:
No, "Green Acres" was not a spinoff of "Petticoat Junction." However, both shows were created by the same team and shared some characters, leading to occasional crossover episodes. |

Realistically, it's probably just easier for people to call it a spin off than to go into the complicated history of a 1950s radio show and an overworked TV producer who was tasked with helming a third concurrent series. Still, I think the better term is "sister show". |

That one is even more difficult to understand. At least GA and PJ had the town and a few characters in common, but how on earth is GA's premise related to TBH? I know Oliver and Lisa appeared on TBH in a later season, but that was several years after the premiere of GA.

As I said in an earlier post, the spinning off is of a character. In Mary Tyler Moore's show, Rhoda was a popular character, so they spun her off into a new show. Maude and George Jefferson were established in All In the Family (Maude, only briefly), and they were spun off into separate shows.
That scenario doesn't happen with GA and PJ. If people and artificial intelligence want to say GA is a spin off, no harm done, though. |

Maybe more accurately you could say, Green Acres was a spin-off of Petticoat Junction, and the Beverly Hillbillies did a crossover with the two shows.
I know Hooterville was mentioned in an early episode of the Beverly Hillbillies, but I'm not convinced it's the SAME Hooterville as in GA and PJ. When the Clampetts made a trip to Hooterville in the later seasons, Jed said he'd never HEARD of the place.... And they made a trip there shortly after they'd returned from a trip back to the Hills if I'm not mistaken, so I don't think the drove ALL THE WAY back there. |
