Was that the first time they showed it? I thought I read somewhere they had not aired it as well as the Tupac segment.
What did you think about it? It raised some interesting facts. Murder or Suicide? |

I'm not a fan, I just thought it was interesting how they had a hand-writing specialist analyze it and they thought the last few lines were not written by him and they thought the note was a 'goodbye' note from his music career and not a suicide note. Regardless if you think it was a suicide or murder, I thought they raised interesting facts on both sides of the case.
The Tupac segment has not aired on Lifetime as far as I know.. |

Ya I think they first showed this in 1997. This is another segment Lifetime hasn't shown. I dont know why Lifetime doesn't air some episodes. Maybe in the future

To the best of my knowledge, it WAS the first time the Kurt Cobain segment was shown on Unsolved Mysteries. Here's a list of other segments that (as far as I can tell) were never shown on Lifetime:
1) The murder of Tupac Shakur. 2) A 1989 segment in which two kids were abducted and later photographed. 3) The 1987 murder of a Texas gunsmith (the segment aired early in the 1989-90 season). 4) A 1994 segment about a mother and her 5-year-old boy who were murdered in Texas during the 1981 Christmas season. I know there are more UM segments that haven't materialized on Lifetime, but the ones that I just mentioned stand out in my mind. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who recall having seen any of these particular segments. |

I meant that it WAS the first time the UM segment about Kurt Cobain was shown on Lifetime. Sorry about the little error and any confusion I might have caused about saying.

I am writing a research paper about Kurt Cobain, whether it was a murder or a suicide. I was wondering if anyone has a recording of that episode I could borrow, or some places where I could get the information that was on that show. This paper is due soon so get ahold of me as soon as possible. My e-mail address is Shaggy_Ed@hotmail.com

It's interesting to see a thread from 2001! A lot of people have covered Kurt's death outside of UM and a lot more details are out now of Kurt's final months/weeks/days. Kurt planned his suicide over a long period and actually almost died from an attempt in Rome. It's clear to me that Kurt wrote the note over a period as well. The main argument now seems to be that if someone wanted to murder him they could have gotten away with it because of how suicidal and drugged out that he was.

Let the man rest in peace. I loved UM, but the more research I do on many cases, the more frustrated I get, knowing that UM was more interested in TV ratings, than presenting cases by factual evidence. |

Let's review, shall we.... One of the last songs that Cobain wrote was titled "I hate myself and I want to die." Cobain had bad problems with heroin. Less than one month before he died, he attempted suicide in Italy, while on tour, and as a result, had to fly back to Washington State, and enter a drug treatment centre. Just over two weeks later, he walks out of the centre, returns home, and less than 48 hours later, he kills himself. But why let the facts get in the way of a good narrative? |

that said, I don't think it is a good segment for UM because I don't see it as a mystery. But I understand why the took on the segment back then. Like you said they were looking for ratings. a lot of credible detail has come out after the segment aired. |
