As a previous poster mentioned, there are residual rights to deal with. Some production companies weren’t thinking about residuals for actors when they wrote soap contracts 30 years ago. Same for music.
The other expense is digitization. Older episodes are on bulky videotape and they have to be converted to digital. That costs money, and that will generally only happen if there is a big audience for the show to be run on TV run and/or DVD release. Look at “The Farmer’s Daughter”. Granted, it’s not a soap. Antenna TV wanted to run it. But neither Sony nor Antenna TV wanted to pay for new prints to be struck from the original negatives, because they don’t feel the potential audience justifies the investment. So it remains in the vault. |

It didn't look like it was mastered from original elements. My guess is that it was at some previous time it was mastered to videotape. I don't think any old Screen Gems show has been remastered from new prints derived from original negatives, except season one of Hazel (and possibly the Partridge Family). As far as the soaps go, some of the videotapes were probably wiped. Even for a well-preserved show like Dark Shadows, they had to rely on kinescope films for several episodes when it was mastered to DVD (and when it was shown in its entirety on Sci-Fi). |

Well, there’s that, too. ABC regularly wiped its soaps until the late 70s. The only reason that the first five years of “Ryan’s Hope” survived is because ABC didn’t own the show. But the majority of the 1970s episodes of AMC and OLTL are gone.

When it comes to soap operas ABC has always been known as the soap opera king and with All My Children and One Life To Live they have always been classic soap operas. And All My Children was the soap opera that introduced people to the character Erica Kane who was played by the talented Susan Lucci and Kelly Ripa who played the character Hayley on the soap opera and One Life To Live was the soap which introduced fans to actor James DePaiva and his wife Kassie DePaiva and seeing that ABC has regained the rights to both soap operas again means that ABC will most likely put All My Children on DVD and One Life To Live will also get a DVD release soon because you don't hardly see soap operas on DVD and it would be a nice treat for fans of All My Children and One Life To Live. But one thing that would work for ABC is another chance to revive Soapnet but this time show it exclusively on Hulu or bring it back as an app where fans could get a free trial first then all soap opera episodes would be priced cheap at $1,99 for members and it would work miracles. But two other ABC soaps that would be great to see on DVD would be Loving /The City and the General Hospital spin-off Port Charles and the Loving DVD sets would have Loving on one disc and The City on the last disc along with a new version of the Loving theme from 1993 performed by American Idol's Clay Aiken because he sounds like Jeffrey Osborne and Clay would do the theme song justice. Would DVD sets of One Life To Live and All My Children work well for fans?
