Default All in the Family saved Arnie from cancellation during 71-72 season

Once Arnie started showing signs of growth on Monday nights in the fall of 1971, CBS decided to move the show to Saturday night and air after Mary Tyler Moore at 9pm. It became a top 20 show and was enough to be renewed for following season.

My Three Sons was the 10pm show and Arnie the 10:30 show on Mondays for CBS in the fall of 71. In fact both shows did not do well in those time slots and were moved in December. My Three Sons was moved to Thursdays at 8:30 basically thrown to the wolves, the lead in show Me and the Chimp had disaster written all over it, and to make matters worse on NBC was The Flip Wilson Show.

With respect to Arnie, the series was not saved by All in the Family but by Sandy Duncan of all people. CBS was very high on Sandy giving her show Funny Face the slot behind Family, and it got off to a great start. However The show had to be pulled in December, Sandy needed surgery and time to recover so CBS needed a replacement series and that was Arnie saved from the chopping block by Sandy's misfortune. CBS was aware and the writer alluded to the fact that Arnie was being carried by the shows in front of it, when renewal time came Arnie got the axe. The show on March 4th 1972 was episode 23 of season 2, the next to last first run episode of the series.
