Default Similar show from the 70s or 80s

Okay, seeing as tho I have not been the only one on this board to confuse early UM segments with some other show that aired unsolved mysteries, does anyone remember what show(s) these segments could be confused with? It wouldnt be America's Most Wanted either...im talking BEFORE that began.

The only other one I remember is "Missing, Reward" and I barely remember it. It did have some missing persons cases on it and it aired from 1989-92 so that could be why if some people are confusing their stories with UM segments since they aired the same years. Stacy Keach was the host.

Thanks, guys. I will do a tvtome check ojn some of those shows. I just remember watching unsolved mysteries- type shows before the show aired and would like to follow up on some of the stories that stayed with me. I LOVED Real people and That' s Incredible.

I have some really vague memories of an hour long "special" on missing/abducted children. I think this would have been in the mid to late eighties. I believe it was repeated a few times, and has been mentioned on this board in the past. The title escapes me at the moment.

Someone else already mentioned In Search Of. There was also Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World, which covered the paranormal/unknown.

There were a bunch of cheesy documentaries in the seventies about a variety of mysterious/pseudo-science type topics. Most of them had re-enactments. A few I remember (from reruns of course): "Mysterious Monsters", "The Bermuda Triangle", "Overlords of the UFO", "Mysteries From Beyond Earth", "Beyond Belief".

My personal favorite was "Overlords of the UFO". This used to air all the time on TBS/TNT at like 4am. The host was a total stiff. In his opening monolog, he says something like "I have seen real UFOs". Cracks me up every time. Not to mention that aside from the occasional humorous dialog, watching this documentary is about as exciting as watching paint dry. To this day I don't think I've watched the entire thing.

Default Well...

There were quite a few local shows - One of which is actually featured in a couple of UM segments (Kathy Hobbs offhand) and that is called "Crime Watch" I think it might have been syndicated throughout the midwest in the 1980s but I'm not sure - I remember seeing it though besides it's brief clips on UM.

UM also had a spinoff called "Final Appeal" in the mid 90s with cases dealing with people trying to appeal their convictions - You might be remembering this as it was also hosted by Mr. Stack - Quick question for anyone who might know this: Were the cases profiled on "Final Appeal" reinserted into the regular UM seires when Lifetime aquired the rights because I swear I think a number of the "Final Appeal" cases on UM were originally part of this spinoff.

Later.

I've always been intrigued by missing persons cases and over the years I've watched as many programs as I could find that dealt with these kind of cases. I remember HBO did a series of shows on missing children and adults back in the early 80's. There were also some syndicated specials about missing persons in the late 80's/early 90's. As mentioned in an earlier post, a show called "Missing: Reward" was fairly similar to Unsolved Mysteries and did a lot of missing persons and unsolved murder stories. About the only other program I can think of was a syndicated show called "Prime Suspect" that aired in the early 90's. It was a thirty minute show and was probably more like America's Most Wanted than UM. Each week they looked at serious crimes (murders, violent robberies) that had gone unsolved. It was only on for a couple of seasons and I'm drawing a blank when it comes to the name of the host.

I can solve that problem, rerungirl. Prime Suspect was hosted by Mike Hegedus.

I got the info from the book entitled The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows. The book describes Prime Suspect as "America's Most Wanted without reenactments." The series ran in syndication from 1992 to 1994.

There is also a current show out there called "Missing" that I think has been mentioned on the board before. It deals with only missing persons cases and a lot of them are runaways and family abductions.

Interestingly, the Sherry Hart case was profiled on Prime Suspect.
