The Stephens family cars
Here is the list of Darrin and Samantha's various cars during the eight year run. Also included are Larry Tate's cars.
This is the most accurate list I could compile. I loathe to admit it but there are a few episodes, just a few, I have not seen. Occasionally, a car would appear in only one or two episodes as Chevrolet was the sponsor and wanted to show off new models as they were introduced. As I noted before, the convertible seen in the pilot/episode #1 was a 1964 Ford Thunderbird due to the fact Chevrolet had not signed on as a sponsor until the show was sold to ABC in the fall of 1964. From episode #2 to #254 the Stephens were loyal customers at Westport's local Chevy dealer. The only deviation from this was the 1970 Sierra Yellow Pontiac Bonneville convertible they drove in episode #203 "Salem Saga." I suppose the Avis desk at the Salem airport didn't have any Chevrolet's available that day. 1.1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super Sport convertible (black & white season, color uncertain)-The Chevelle was a new model in 1964 so Chevrolet was anxious to promote it. 2.1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super Sport convertible (black & white season, color uncertain, darker than 1964 model) 3.1965 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa convertible (black & white season, color uncertain)-The Corvair was extensively restyled for 1965 so Chevrolet was eager to have potential buyers see it. 4.1965 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe (black & white season, color uncertain)This car was seen in episode #26 "Driving Is the Only Way to Fly" and is the car Harold Harold (Paul Lynde in his first Bewitched appearance) taught Samantha how to drive in. The name of the driving school was Reliable Driving School. 5.1966 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe (first car in '66-'67 Color season) Willow Green 6.1966 Chevrolet Impala station wagon (appeared only in episode #90 "Soapbox Derby" driven by Samantha to take Johnny Mills soapbox racer to the track) Mist Blue 7.1967 Chevrolet Camaro convertible (again, a new model this year to be heavily promoted) Nantucket Blue w/white convertible top 8.1968 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport convertible Grotto Blue w/white convertible top 9.1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Concours station wagon (first seen being polished by Abner Kravitz in episode #121 "My What Big Ears You Have" and seen that same season later driven by, oddly enough, Darrin in episode #131 "How Green Was My Grass") Palomino Ivory 10.1969 Chevrolet Caprice Custom Coupe (car driven to rush Samantha to the hospital to give birth to Adam) Dusk Blue w/Dark Blue vinyl roof 11.1969 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport convertible Rallye Green w/Black convertible top 12.1970 Chevrolet Impala convertible (the car "Super Arthur" tried to drive) Misty Turquoise w/Black convertible top 13.1970 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport coupe (another restyled model to be promoted but seen in episode #209 "Samantha's Pet Warlock) Astro Blue w/Dark Blue vinyl roof 14.1971 Chevrolet Impala convertible (seen only in episode #241 "Three Men and a Witch on a Horse) Tuxedo Black w/Black convertible top 15.1972 Chevrolet Impala convertible (seen only in episode #249 "George Washington Zapped Here, Part One) Sequoia Green w/White convertible top Larry Tate: 1.1965 Chevrolet Caprice Custom Sedan (black & white season, color uncertain)The Caprice was a new model for 1965 introduced in the middle of the model year. 2.1966 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon (black & white season, color uncertain)The 1966 Caprice station wagon was Chevrolet's first wagon to use wood side paneling since the early '50's. This car was seen driven by Larry in episode #65 "Disappearing Samantha" only. I guess Louise decided she, Larry and Johnathan couldn't all fit in Larry's Corvette. 3.1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Goodwood Green 4.1968 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport Custom Coupe (driven by Larry in episode #152 "Weep No More My Willow") Matador Red w/Black vinyl roof 5.1969-1970 Chevrolet Corvette convertible (the one everyone associates with "Cotton Top")Last seen in episode #247 "Serena's Youth Pill". Daytona Yellow That's about it as far as I know. Hope someone enjoys this. "See the USA in your Chevrolet!" Larry Tate |

I like the Chvey Nova Liz drove out of her driveway at 1164 MGC Westport Conn.
in her season one cast commercial, she especially liked the bucket seats and the very versatile stick shift, a well sticked witch is a happy witch. Larry Tate |

A few additional observations: The Stephens' cars 1. The '64 Chevelle Malibu SS convertible may have been Goldwood Yellow, because it looked whitish on the early B&W episodes. 2. The '65 Chevelle Malibu SS convertible appeared metallic gray, but I believe it was painted in a pale metallic purple called Evening Orchid that was available only on the 1965 models. 4. The '65 Impala Sport Coupe driven in "Driving is the Only Way to Fly" is possibly Ermine White; it is a tricked-up Impala that was also used in the Shell gasoline commercials that year. Remember when Harold Harold (Paul Lynde) yells, "Carefulthere'samovingvanupahead!"? That's when Sam split the car in half, with one side going to the left of the van and the other going to the right. In the Shell commercials. the left side of the car is using Shell gasoline with Platformate (remember that?); the right side of the car isn't. And sure enough, the left side of the car goes right through the barrier that marks the spot where the right side ran out of gas (go figure!). 8. The '68 Camaro convertible was an RS/SS combination (note the fake hood stacks which were part of the SS trim package). In one scene, notice that Sam puts Tabitha in an old-fashioned car seat (complete with steering wheel and stick shift) over the back of the right-hand bucket seat. You can't do that anymore! In fact, GM introduced their child and infant "Love Seats" during the 1968 model run. Also, in the 1969 Christmas episode, Darrin pulls up in a 1970 Chevrolet Impala convertible (Cortez Silver with a black top) just as Larry Tate pulls up in his Daytona Yellow 1969 Corvette Stingray convertible. By the way, the introduction of the 1970 Corvette was delayed until February 26th, the day the all-new Camaro was introduced. Speaking of Larry Tate's cars: 1. Most all 1965 Caprices were Ermine White with black vinyl roofs. I knew a man who worked at the Chevrolet assembly plant in St. Louis at that time, and supposedly all Caprices were built in St. Louis. The design was so new that the proper template hadn't been made to insert the "Caprice" nameplate in the same spot on the front fenders every time, so it appeared as if a drunk had installed them on the first few models. 4. Mabel Albertson (Mrs. Stephens) drove the same black-over-red Impala Super Sport Custom Coupe in "Playmates," the episode where Tabitha turns a bratty little boy into a dog. 5. And, you son-of-a-gun, watch closely the next time you see Larry getting out of that '69 Corvette convertible in that Christmas episode. On the hood is a red "427" engine callout, which is visible as he walks toward the front of the car to inspect that remarkable Christmas display on the Stephens' front lawn. (No wonder "Cotton Top" had so much fun!) The reason Chevrolets disappeared from "Bewitched" after 1968-69 was that Chevy itself had dropped its sponsorship of the series. You'll recall starting with the Sargent era, Oscar Mayer, Kodak, Bufferin and Clairol (of "droop-proof curl" fame) began rotating sponsorship of the show. That's why, no doubt, there was a Pontiac Bonneville used during the Salem shows. I think the '72 Impala convertible was also Paul Lynde's family car during the one-and-only season of "The Paul Lynde Show" (also an Ashmont Production). "Be smart. Be sure. Buy now at your Chevrolet Dealer's!" |

The Daytona Yellow 1969 Corvette that Larry Tate once drove in the Christmas '69 episode is also seen, albeit only the front corner, in the "Harry Simian" episode in which Sam turns a lost chimpanzee into the trademark for a man's cologne.

If you purchase your checks from Styles Checks, pay close attention to the Corvette collection. There are four Corvettes from the first 40 years of the marque's history:
1953 Corvette in Polo White; 1963 Sting Ray Split-Window Coupe in Riverside Red; 1993 40th-anniversary convertible in Ruby Red; and the 1969 Stingray roadster in Daytona Yellow, with a 427 callout on the hood. The top is down, but I suspect it may have been the car Larry Tate drove during the '69-'70 season, including "Serena's Youth Pill" and the '69 Christmas episode. "Chevrolet. Building a better way to see the U. S. A." (Okay, it's the 1972-73 ad campaign, but you can't do much better than a classic Corvette!)

The 1964 Chevelle Malibu SS convertible is featured front and center in one scene in Season 1, Episode 6, "Little Pitchers Have Big Fears," featuring June Lockhart as an overprotective mother and Jimmy Mathers as her son (yes, Jerry's little brother).

Originally airing for eight seasons from 1964 to 1972, Bewitched followed the fortunes of Samantha, a suburban housewife, who also happens to be a witch, married to a mere mortal human, Darren. Beyond the show's magical spells and supernatural situations, was some of the best integrated car marketing of any television series in history, featuring a variety of cars as legendary as Samantha's twinkling nose. Today, we're taking a look at the cars of Bewitched. Let's begin.
