Why did Beaver's family refer to him as "The Beaver" rather than just "Beaver"?

I notice that ALL the Time ... is kinda odd to call your child THE Beaver

But then again in Mid Atlantic States they refer to the children as THE Boy back in the day +-

Interesting if the Thunderbird was called the Beaver if the choice of Jerry Mather's LITB character's name might be different.

Yes, me. If people were talking to me, they'd just say the word. Talking about me, they'd say, "The -----."
