Default TV critic who felt Facts of Life should have been cancelled after season 1

Robert Bowden of the St Petersburg Times in May of 1980 and the show would run another 8 years

Yet Facts of Life had a ratings surge during the summer of 1980. Within a few years, NBC would be the Network King.

It wasnt a huge surge but I see the show stayed in the top 20 during June and July. Fell off a bit in August

The Facts of Life is a rare show in that it had bad ratings its first season and was almost cancelled. They rebooted the show with major changes and eliminating many characters and bringing in another one. It worked.
I actually like the first season but no doubt the show got better over the next few seasons.

I thought season 1 was considered August of 1979. And season 2 started in March of 1980

No. August 1979 was Season 1A. It was given a 4 week run. Then they decided to bring it back in spring 1980. Jennie O'Hara (Miss Mahoney) left after conflicts with Charlotte over who was going to be the Queen Bee.

Spring 1980 was Season 1B. This was when they have hints of a cast reduction. There were the same 4 girls featured in all the print ad and TV promos.

Season 2 began in November 1980.

No contest there. Jennie O'Hara added absolutely nothing to the show.

She should have been a part time role. She wasnted to have Miss Mahoney more of a maternal role to the girls and Charlotte balked.

Sorry, but i have to DISAGREE: Jennie O' Hara as Miss Mahoney was a great addition to the show; she was funny and cheeky, and she had a way of making sarcastic remarks and get away with it.

Jenny didn't necessarily want to be the queen bee instead of Charlotte. She just thought she would be a nice adult female confidant for the girls. She says she totally understood Charlotte was the central female adult, and not her.

I too liked Miss Mahoney. I just didn't like her hair and wardrobe until her last episode.

And that newspaper snippet is a neat find!

I agree with you 100% on what concerns Miss Mahoney: there was a HUGE improvement on her appearance by her last episode! She looked very attractive and i was really saddened to see her leave the show lol.... (i always found her amusing as i said before)

Welcome back, 80sSitcoms.

Jenny O'Hara actually said on Twitter in 2019 that the whole situation was weird and toxic on Facts of Life. She also said in the same Twitter response that Charlotte didn't want any other adults around.

Huh, interesting. She needed at least one adult around to confide in, to talk with, to bounce off of about the girls and about the school. That's what was missing after season 1.
