During the 1st season the show was not in top 10 but once the season ended and the Rerun season started, that's when the show was discovered and quickly became the most watched show.

The first season of All in the Family was the proof of concept season. Rating weren't really important that first go around, the show was going to be either a spectacular success or a spectacular failure, there was no third possibility. The big question, could it stay on the air. Sponsors, the public, the FCC maybe even politicians any or all could blow their stacks, but if they didn't... . CBS was very carful placing the show behind Hee Haw as mismatched a pair of shows as you could possibly have. Hee Haw representing where CBS had been, and All in the Family where CBS was going. So there the series sat on this safe island, the lead-in audience was of little interest to the new CBS, they could come or go didn't matter. On the other side of All in the Family, the little watched CBS Reports. The show of course survived, the press was writing about it, the rest was just a matter of word of mouth by mid-April it was in the top 15.

I can totally see this. The show did not get its groove until season 2. Season 2 is so superior to season 1. The actors really develop their characters by season 2. Season 3 is my favorite season. It's the last full season with the Jeffersons as neighbors as they move mid season 4. The show was still excellent in season 4 but season 2 and 3 are the best IMHO. I also say the same thing about Golden Girls and Roseanne. The first seasons of those shows are excellent but they got better with season 2 and 3.

Season 2 the actors seem natural in their characters and it all seems more natural. Season 1 was ground breaking and still really good. But if you watch season 2 and then 3, the actors fine tune their performances and take the show a higher level. In season 1, Edith was not that developed and was used for funny lines. In season 2 and 3 she is fully developed and we feel such empathy with her. Archie also gets his groove too.
