Default Did you know that Fish only ranked in the top 10 TWICE? It was because...........

it aired after Three's Company on December 20 1977 and before Three's Company on Jan 12, 1978. After the Fish followed Three's Company it ranked #2 and while Three's Company finished #3 for the week even though it wasnt a repeat episode. The When the aired again on Tuesday before Three's Company, it finished #9 while Three's Company finished #5.

I remember watching Fish in primetime, but my uncle was controlling the TV that we watched it on -- and I don't think he put on 3'sC or Kotter very often at all.

So not only didn't those strong lead-ins help, apparently there weren't enough "network-jumpers" like us either...!

Steve Landesberg (Dietrich) was in just 1 episode of Fish.

Hal Linden (Barney Miller) had an uncredited appearance, so possibly just a cameo or something.
-- EDIT -- it's confirmed at IMDb that Linden made a cameo appearance.

I thought of Barney Miller as an old man's show at that time. Fish, included.

Three's Company and Welcome Back Kotter were fun, young shows.

Fish was a great character on Barney Miller but his character couldn’t carry a whole show. In defense of Abe Vagoda, I don’t think any of the Barney Miller characters could spin off to another show.

Show like this should have aired right after Barney Miller

A very brief cameo appearance, Barney was shown for around 5 seconds and didn't even speak. Dietrich's episode was much more satisfying, he got a lot of screen time there.
