Default The John Charles Walters Productions logo

When I was a kid watching Taxi, and the ending came where the logo at the end of the show came on, "Good Night, Mr. Walters" and Mr. Walters responded by mumbling "Uhh hmmm" I always thought that was the boss who ran the Sunshine cab company.

I think the owner's name was Mr Mackenzie, wasn't it? In the two-parter episodes "On the Job 1 and 2", when the company temporarily went bust, they heard a gunshot from Mackenzie's office and thought he'd shot himself (it later turned out that he'd shot his accountant.)

yes, it was Mr. McKenzie. But before him, there was another boss, but I forget his name.

"JOHN CHARLES WALTERS" was'nt a real person. I used to think it was, but it's just a name they made up. It was going to be JOHN WALTERS, but then they found out there's a John Walters working at MGM, so they added the CHARLES.

And that harried producer at the end who mumbles something, after a woman says "GOODNIGHT MR. WALTERS"! was Ed Weinberger, one of the shows producers. He was also associated with THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, RHODA and, I think CHEERS & FRASIER. He can often be heard laughing on all these shows. It's him who's doing the laugh that sounds like a goose, you know, that HA HA HA HA.

He also appeared in a TAXI episode. In "MEMORIES OF CAB 804" when Tony's telling how he talked a guy out of jumping off a bridge (he just said "HEY! DON'T DO THAT"! ) he played the guy.

Interesting information, Treky, I didn't know the guy at the end was Ed. Weinberger. Thank you.

Oh yes, I remember that. And afterwards, Bobby was like, "And he tries to compare that story to mine..."

you're welcome. Some more information-the shows theme was originally going to be a different song, and the theme was going to be used in an early episode. The episode's called "Angela" or something. (it's that one where Alex meets this girl who's fat, and lacking in confidence). And the opening of the series, where the cab's driving over the George Washington bridge, was going to be used in that episode to "bridge" scenes together. When they decided to use it for the opening, it wasn't long enough, so they edited together various shots of it, to "strech it out".

Also, in the shows opening and closing, that's Tony Danza driving the cab.

I always enjoyed that clip at the end. For me, it ranks up there with Ubu, Worldwide Pants and the MTM kitten.

Some fun facts I found surfing the web:

One holiday variant of the logo has the female voice calling after him, "Merry Christmas, Mr. Walters!"

In the last episode, Mr. Walters asks the secretary out. She says, "Ohhhh, Mr. Walters!!"

in the last episode, when he asks the secretary out; there was a whole scene written about that; that was scripted but never filmed.

in the final episode; the ending of the secretary saying "Goodnight Mr. Walters"! and he mumbles something as he walks out, was going to also have her say "Mr. Walters, wait! You forgot to do (something)." Then he pauses, then says "Can't you do it"? She says "Oh c'mon Mr. Walters; it'll only take a minute". Then he reluctently goes with her into a control room, they do whatever (now just get all those thoughts out of your mind!!)
then go back out in the hall, and that's when she says "Goodnigh Mr. Walters"! and he mumbles something and starts to walk out. Then he pauses, turns, and you see his face for the first time as he says "Want to have a drink together"? and she comes out and says "Oh, Mr. Walters"! and they walk out together.

I remember reading somewhere that Ed. Weinberger was the "actor" playing Mr. Walters in those bits.

Mr. Walters is just a character representing the company, Like Captain Birds eye for Birds Eye forzen food or Green Giant.

When I was little, I always thought it was Elaine (Marilu Henner) saying "Good Night Mr. Walters"
