LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Back in 1962 -- the year in which FOX's new comedy "Oliver Beene" takes place -- a TV show with 13.8 million viewers wouldn't necessarily be considered a hit. In the much more fragmented world of TV today, however, an audience of that size will get you into top 15 in the Nielsen rankings of total viewers. "Oliver Beene" did that in its debut Sunday (March 9). The show, which plays like "The Wonder Years," but with less weren't-the-'60s-great nostalgia, was FOX's most-watched comedy debut since the premiere of "Titus" in March 2000. ("Malcolm in the Middle," which premiered in January 2000, beat both of those performances.) Equally important to FOX, the new show kept nearly all of the audience of its lead-in, "The Simpsons." Its 13.8 million viewers were only a small drop-off from the 14.4 million that "The Simpsons" delivered, and among the advertiser-friendly demographic of adults 18-49, their ratings were identical, 6.1. The combination helped FOX win the night among adults 18-49 and total viewers. |

"Oliver Beene" is a hit.
"Andy Richter" is cancelled (maybe). It's official, my life sucks. |
