Question Max Baer's Characters

Why must Max Baer portray Jetro and his sister? Pardon me for saying so 'Max Baer makes a ugly girl/woman.'

Max hated being Jethrine,too-and that is why he wasn't in the series much as Jethrine. The character basicly vanished after the first season and was never refered to again.

Max got to resent being Jethro after a while also. The role had typecast him for life,so he found a career on the other side of the camera.

Jetherine wasn't meant to be a beauty; the humor was in the way that she looked (the Mary Pickford curls, those homemade outfits, that itty-bitty high pitched voice). It's too bad Max Baer couldn't embrace the Jetherine character, because she was really very funny and I always enjoyed the few shows that involved her.
The writers never explained her disappearance from the show; she just vanished somewhere inside the mansion (maybe she got lost!).

I thought her disappearance was explained in one of the latter season 1 eps, after Jethrine came with Pearl back to Beverly Hills. She is there in the mansion for a few eps, then she disappears, and later Pearl says she got a letter saying she and that peddler 'back home' decided to get married and they left for somewhere. In reality, I think it was that Max Baer just refused to play Jethrine any longer, and with the show firmly entrenched at #1 in the nation, Henning and his writers relented and agreed the show does not need a hyper-silly joke within the joke that was the essence of the show itself; at least not any longer.

Did you know that Paul Henning's daughter, Linda Kay Henning, supplied the voice for Jethrine? She went on to play Betty Jo in Petticoat Junction.

Default Max Baer's club in Vegas...

I'm not sure if this has become a reality, but ole Jethro applied to open a casino in Vegas called "The Gambler" with a Beverly Hillbillies theme. Apparantly, he had his license approved a couple of years ago. I remember him talking about it on TV one day. See this story (last 2 paragraphs):

in the interview with him on "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES-THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION" he says that he didn't like having to change between Jethro and Jethrene and that the makeup was starting to do something to his skin, so Paul Henning agreed to drop Jethrine.

He also says it was around 1980-81 that he changed his mind about Jethro.

I doubt it's Max's voice it sounds like they dubbed it in.

No, as said upthread, she's voiced by Linda Kaye Henning (Betty Jo from Petticoat Junction).

I didn't mind Jethrine, she could be funny. Just looking at the picture of her posted in this thread makes me laugh. I'm not sorry she vanished though, I feel like we got enough of her.

I don't blame Max for getting tired of playing Jethro. By the end of the season, they really had made him too stupid to live.

Agreed, I cringe when Jethrine shows up.

As classic and hilarious as Season 1 was (as the “fish out of water” sitcom), definitely the Pearl/Jethrine angle was totally intolerable, not to mention unnecessary. Often the scenes seemed to be unrelated to the plot anyway.

At least Petticoat Junction came along as a vehicle for Bea B next season, and thankfully that angle was jettisoned!

Yes, the creation of Hooterville was a much better direction.
