Before millions of people gathered around their TV sets to watch their favorite shows, radio was the primary source of entertainment and pop culture for North Americans. Before you could watch the latest news, sports, and music, you could listen to them (sometimes clearly) on your radio along with the rest of the family. Some of the most popular radio series of the 30s and 40s later became great TV series in the 50s and 60s, including sitcoms "Father Knows Best", "Ozzie and Harriet", "Our Miss Brooks", "Burns and Allen", "Jack Benny", and "Granby's Green Acres", which later became "Green Acres" on TV.
On the Internet, there are a few sites where you can find these shows and many others, with the Internet Archive being a great starting point, but I think I may have found one that has the largest OTR collection out there. It is called RadioEchoes and its numbers are simply staggering. The collection currently includes: -3225 different series -84,077 episodes -If every episode was played non-stop, it would run for 3 years, 271 days, 20 hours, 28 minutes, and 17 seconds (including commercials!) In short, this is an excellent site for pure nostalgia and history lovers. And here are a few highlights from it for you to enjoy: RadioEchoes Home Page Comedy Shows Abbott & Costello (160 episodes) Ozzie and Harriet (84) Amos and Andy (335) Bob Hope (226) Burns and Allen (278) Father Knows Best (111) Fibber McGee and Molly (1056) Fred Allen (137) The Goldbergs (436) The Great Gildersleeve (521) Jack Benny Program (783) The Life Of Riley (172) My Favorite Husband (with Lucille Ball) (111) Our Miss Brooks (201) Red Skelton (256) And that's only a sample! If you want more, let me know and I'll find them for you. The site is adding new shows every day. You can find those by clicking on the Recent Additions tab at the top of the home page. Until then, go ahead and "return to those golden days of yesteryear" and enjoy! |
