This is how I would have done it.

Slowed down the opening but kept it the same tunes, just a slower pace...

Added Shavar Ross, Nikki Swasey and Janet Jackson to the intro (Charlene would return) and Shavar would finally get a spot in the intro after so many seasons on the show as would Nikki, who's character would be dating Arnold! The series would wrap up with Willis marrying Charlene.

Closure…

Even if they had a small cast for one last season, this would be the complete cast for the last one.

They probably wouldn't have known it was their last season before it started, but it's interesting.

I agree. There is no need for a season nine of Diff'rent Strokes. An extra three episodes for DS's season eight should've been just enough to provide closure. Remember, the ABC season of DS was cut from 22 to 19 episodes because of lower-than-expected ratings and a general feeling that DS had just run its course.
